a friend of mine bought one and attempted to build it for a drag car. he spent about 4k on the engine but got so frustrated with all the bs it needed that it's just sitting outside his garage.

I had a MK3 for a while. It had tons of stuff done to it and when it ran right, was fast as hell. I wouldn't buy another one personally. They're 3700 lb. pigs. If I was going to get back into a Supra I'd get a MK2 and call my buddy Aaron at http://www.rabidchimp.com/ for a turbo kit. Have you considered FC RX7s? Far more fun than Supras and a much cooler community. As soon as I have a garage a LS1 FC is going to happen in it. Supraforums and Supramania are both loaded with info. I'd stay in the MK3 section on supraforums though, as most of the MKIV guys don't think the MK3 deserves to have a Supra badge on them ;)

I used to have a Mk2 w/ the 5MGE. Pretty decent car overall, but it could've had a little more HP for my taste. I passed on the Mk3s 'cause they were so much heavier and not much more power..

my brother has a very nice mk3 supra, soon to be a large single 1j. The 7m is a great engine once you figure out the HG issue, just don't slap a T78 on to it and set the boost at 1bar, hehehe, rebuilt engine my ass. It was fun while it lasted. There are some nice mk3's out there though, I wouldnt mind picking one up.

You should talk to blacke30. His brother owns a complete 1jz TT supra, completely jdm...i hate using those words i sound like a fool..but it really is a sick car. Just converted over to a single turbo and puts down nearly 350hp. Ill try to find a pic

I personally like the Mk2 celica/supra, not a huge fan of the supra wheel flairs but a lowered Mk2 on some wide wheels and maybe some stretch does it for me.

My buddy had one. Different head gasket, downpipe, full exhaust, boost controller and a fuel controller. Was pretty fun, pulled pretty hard.

agree - and if i had another mk3, it'd be getting a 1j. But, the 7m is doable after a head mill and HKS stopper gasket.

Yea, HG issue is a pretty big one... Edited my post. Sorry got confused with toyota nomenclature. 3sgte and 1 and 2j are the only way to roll.

I was a previous mk3 guy. had a haggard '87 turbo and a nice '88 turbo. I fell in love with them, despite their heavy weight and technical problems (headgaskets!!!!). One day, when I can afford to, I'd like to get back into one, hopefully the same color as the '88 I had... drool.

I would say find the cleanest example you can, with the most records, and have a small bankroll on hand for "maintenance"... which can get costly. The parts aren't any more expensive than what we're used to with e30s, for the most part, but the car seems to need frequent attention. Kept properly they're lots of fun.

    here's my old 88

edit: backtrail, it's a 7mgte in the turbos - and they're actually pretty well-engineered engines... just for the poor headgasket and valve cover gasket design.
