Agreed, cops should have discretion. But if you break the law, you break the law. Maybe it does have something do do with the fact that you're white, but I hope not. I just think that cops should enforce the law equally to all people and not give special breaks to people because of their race. I'm white too, but the cop didn't give me a break.

I got pulled over in my 74 Porsche 914, after pulling out and getting on it a bit... I was running 52 in a 35 (at the top of 2nd gear, about 7000rpm) when a cop hiding out zapped me with radar.

I pulled over once I saw him pull out after me, I had everything in hand to give to him.

I was nice to the guy, told him I had just built the motor... It had cam and was bored/stroked, so I just got a little carried away.

He comes back and says "Its a nice car, but take it out to the country to try it out".

I was 25 at the time. I thought for sure I was getting a ticket, but sometimes things work in your favor.

I was respectful and spoke the truth, and nothing else. Sometimes it works.

    Tom

How did the cop run the plates, if you did not have plates? Were they just in the car, but not mounted?

Let's see, you had 4 illegal things on your car? no muffler no plates, no insurance and no license. So yeah, you're lucky and your treated him with respect, but that cop is a retard and frankly should be punished for not bothering to enforce the law.

    It is called discretion.

I imagine he assessed the situation and figured that a warning would be enough to get blunt to comply with the law. Unlike a young kid who maybe would give him a little grief, attitude, or otherwise might not make the same impression - that guy, in the cop's eyes, maybe needs a hefty ticket or even a little 'cuff time.

Is it perhaps the result of stereotypes on the officer's part? Sure - we all have our prejudices, whether we want to admit it or not. But I imagine old guys like Steve tend to come across better than late teens/twenty somethings. And that played into his favor.

So what. No need to get mad because you didn't catch the same break. Sounds to me like that is more the source of your anger than "the cop not doing his job".

Everytime I get pulled over, I feel like I'm stereotyped right off the bat as that punk ass teenager. After a while the cops mellow out, but getting the ticket is always a 50/50. Haven't gotten pulled over in almost a year though, and hopefully it stays that way for a while.
absolutley, but i dont look like your typical 50 yo white guy either. lots of people judge me for long hair. but yes, identical circumstances with a 20 year old behind the wheel likely would have had different results

And I got put in handcuffs and had my car towed for driving w/o insurance and a license. I was nothing but nice and I never did anything but be cooperate with him he was a nice guy, but he also followed the law. Legally that cop should have impounded your car for driving without everything you needed. Seriously you may be lucky, but that cop was not doing his job at all and I wouldn't want a cop like that protecting me.
