i'm pretty the explosion effect from the machine gun is just dirt and debris and stuff flying up wherever the rounds hit. i've seen a couple videos like this from the helicopters and those rounds always seem to blow shit up

If you pay attention to the audio, you'll hear the pilot call the range "1500 meters." That's probably Apache video. AC130 would NEVER orbit a target at 4600 feet altitude.

The Apache fires a 30mm, single barreled cannon. All they ever fire is high explosive incendiary ammunition, or some dual purpose ammo (AP) IIRC.
