That 540's tranny is probably about to blow. Look for a later model 525 stick. Will be a little more fun while getting decent gas mileage. Or find some beater E30 and pray that it survives your college years. If you have a car that already works keep it until your done with school. But if you can find a nice cheap E34 buy it, they handle pretty good for the tanks that they are, and they sure feel a million times nicer than an E30 inside. I still prefer my E30 over the E34 though. Cept with passengers then they like the smooth ride, less wind noise, a radio and AC. Also they won't have to worry about actually making it to the destination.sigpicComment

Well that 540 in Nashua already has some suspension goodies and I the tranny is fine as far as I know. Just buy that and you won't have to worry about stupid american car issues.'89 325is S50 Track Montser

Speaking from experience or hearsay?
My parents have a '95 540iA M-Sport (which includes EDC III, Servotronic, etc.) They purchased the car with 130k miles in late 2004 and the car currently has 195k on it. The only issue I've noticed with the M60 is that it eats up cooling components (our car is a 10/95 production, so it has the Alusil cylinder linings.) Besides that, it has been a pleasure to own. Please don't make a false statement like, "All BMW V8's require lots of money and are high maintenance."
To the OP, If you are looking at a M60 E34 (530i/T or 540i,) be sure to find one with an Alusil motor.- Trey

Worked at a shop for 2 years, and V8's have been a nightmare. Intake seals, rear diaphram, valley pan, ets. Those engine needed work every time we had one come in. Came to a point when I just made a kit for the whole top of the engine repairs including valve cover gaskets.Speaking from experience or hearsay?

e34's 6-cylinder models came in for tune-ups, v8=s came in for overhauls. LOLComment

Interesting, in the four years we've owned ours we have replaced countless parts and none of them are ones that you have mentioned.Worked at a shop for 2 years, and V8's have been a nightmare. really? you must be lucky. Regular bill was between 1500-2000 every time. What did you guys replace? Front radius arms, steering links, belt pulleys? Those were common, but had nothing to do with the v8. I do like e34's a lot, and i would take a 535 over all tohers if I could find one.Comment

Motor-wise that 540 has been great, it's seen a little body damage in it's history though which is why I said you should check it over. Feel free to bring it up to my shop as we've done all the work on it lately and we could put it up on the lift and go over it together.'89 325is S50 Track Montser

Between $1500-2000 each time? I guess people just trashed their V8's and took them to you guys. Other than basic maintenance, we have replaced very little with the 540i. We had excessive inner tire wear, which ultimately led to us going to Korman and having them install an adjustable rear subframe (camber/caster,) we have replaced the radiator, power steering pump, various coolant lines, etc. etc. Those are just the thing of value. When you consider this is all done on a near 200k mile V8, it's quite impressive.
I hear many people talk bad about the M60 family motors, but the truth is, if you perform regular maintenance and use sense, they will last a long time. The primary flaw with the M60 motors (and this may apply to the M62) is their faulty cooling components.- Trey

Plus a bagillion. So, just exactly why the fuck would we "talk you out of a Fox body"?
1. We really do not give a shit
2. Fox bodies can be great cars if you like 1940 suspension design
3. If you aren't convinced, it is better that you buy something else
4. This leaves more for us, and none for you, and E30s rock you face off
5. Did I mention the whole "do not give a shit" thing already?
6. We really do not give a shit.
So, right there is like 22 reasons why YOU should go out and buy an E30 and put a 5.0 with a tremec in your fucking car. Then when you wrap it around a tree, you will take out a Mustang AND an E30, thereby making both more rare and valuable.
So, go get with the torch and sawzall, fuckwheat.Originally posted by blunti would jerk larry king off while tonging jflips ass if h0lmes would blow his head offComment
