Thought Obama was going to end the war?

Didnt Obama just say that Bin Laden was no longer a priority, as in we wont be looking for him actively anymore? -
Guest repliedJosh, I think you have the war in Afghanistan and the hunt for Bin Laden confused with the Iraq war. Obama said during his campaign that he would ramp up the search for Bin Laden and he appears to be doing just that. He also said he would take steps to pullout of Iraq and he has been actively working on a plan to pullout.I'm not saying it's a surprise. Whether or not we're in Iraq is not the point. I'm saying that the 2 missile strikes killed 18 people. Of those 18, FIVE were suspected militants. Suspected.
No one is going to care now how many civilians are killed on the side, as long as the bad guys, or at least the people we think are the bad guys, get theirs, too. It's completely subjective reasoning. When it was being done by a president everyone hated, before we even went into Iraq, it was criticized to high hell by all the democrats and liberals because so many civilians were being killed. Now that it's still being carried out, but by a president all the democrats and liberals love, it's being considered "necessary", and "what he said he was going to do all along".Leave a comment:

Just an aside here...
Friend of mine here said "Obama will invite them over here so we wont have to travel so far to fight in order to save fuel"...
Me, I try not to pay attention to any of it... Makes me crazy.Leave a comment:

I don't think thats the war he is trying to end. I have never heard the current ruler of the free world say that he didn't think Bin laden was behind the WTC attacks, if I recall correctly he wanted to devote more resources to fighting the people who attacked us, not go to war with a country because they had, wait didn't have chemical weapons.Leave a comment:

Holding constant all the bipartisanship, there is no magic button that any man can push to bring us out of: the recession, guantanimo bay, or iraq.
Each is so multifaceted that it will take years for any of it to happen.Leave a comment:

When we went to war saying it was a war on terror it was used in the wrong context. Saddam broke so many UN resolutions there was cause to enact a strike. But to say there was weapons of mass destruction was a half truth. There was thousands of pounds of yellow cake that could have been used for some sort of dirty bomb and showed he had plans for a nuclear program, also biological weapons were found but in small quantities. Most likely left overs.
Saddam gave the impression that he did in fact have weapons of mass destruction because he was trying to hold off Iran and others in a regional power struggle.
Things were not as they had seemed but there was reason to strike. Now we understand this and must rebuild Iraq to somewhat better than we found it. We owe it to the people of Iraq.
To say he had direct ties to 911 is wrong but it was still justified.
I think you nailed it on the head. We had our justifications for going to Iraq. And you're right, we do owe it to the people of Iraq to help them back to a better condition. Maybe it's only the few of us that have been to Iraq that know this, but most Iraqis are thankful for us to be there, and most of them realize we are trying to better their quality of life.Leave a comment:

How about trying to stay on topic.Just watch, Guantanamo will not be closed by the due date set by his executive order. His new $1 trillion bail out package will fall short of any stimulus and will only put this country deeper in debt. His double standards in picking his cabinet is sickening. From Tax cheats heading up the IRS and the federal reserve, to the lobbyist now working in the fields they lobbied, to Clinton being accepted after finding out their origination was accepting foreign monies.
Its only just begun........
My point is that if you were an adult during the Gulf War you understood that Saddam was not a religious believer. He was just a plain asshole. 9/11 was about religious extremism. It never made any sense that Saddam would have been behind 9/11 (even though his power came from fighting the U.S. with his no-fly zone crap).
When Bush used 9/11 and Iraq together in every sentence in the build-up for the war, I felt as though I was getting a pitch from some shitty used car salesman. It was insulting. Most people bought into it though.Leave a comment:

I agree. But I'm not trying to support any argument, and I'm not a democrat, either (or a republican). I'm just making a point on the observation I've made. If it's "wrong", so be it. This is just what I'm seeing. I will say that my thread title is probably a bit off.I think you're supporting the Fox, "straw man" argument that says that Democrats (which I'm not) are a bunch of pacifists who wanted to hand the terrorists flowers. That was never the case. Personally, I'm not a follower of Jesus and don't really believe in turning the other cheek. People were pissed off because they read the news and were adults during the Gulf War and understood that Saddam was a complete asshole and ruthless dictator, but not part of 9/11. They were upset that Bush was taking resources from the fight to get bin Laden and wasting them in a separate war.Leave a comment:
