+1 And I never played half life...

You can buy a box set with Half-Life 1 & 2, plus all the downloadable episodes following 2, for like $30.

You don't even need to go to the store now: http://store.steampowered.com/

Download the client, the interface is a little annoying, but it's well worth it for getting to play some of the games.

Half-Life 2 is probably tied with COD4 for my favorite PC game of all time.

Half Life was always one of my favorite games. The graphics are VERY dated but a third party modding group is remaking the game as a free mod to anyone that has any Half Life games whatsoever. I would highly recommend it..because it's Half Life with updated graphics. http://www.blackmesasource.com/
