We do not have a democracy in the US. Further, we have never had a democracy in the US. The Constitution established a representative republic.

However, with the many millions of dollars that corporate America pours into the government (and has for over a hundred years) effectively buying the government they wish to have, it could be effectively argued that what we really have is closer to an outsized oligarchy.
