Americas Hat Stands Up to Islam

Well Kinda. Want to be a citizen......................SHOW YOUR FACE.

Under sweeping regulations that take effect Monday, Muslim women will have to remove their niqabs or any other face-coverings such as burkas before reciting the oath of citizenship to become Canadian, QMI Agency has learned.

Those participating in citizenship ceremonies - the final step in the process to officially become a Canadian - will be given two warnings to unveil themselves.

The first would be upon arrival, when a department official will explain the requirement. If the person refuses, a citizenship judge will ask the individual to show her face before reading the oath.

If the person refuses the second request, the judge will ask them to leave, putting their citizenship in jeopardy. But they will be given other opportunities at future citizenship ceremonies if they change their mind.

If they don't, they will remain permanent residents and give up their right to vote, run for office and hold certain jobs. Permanent residents can be deported for serious crimes.

The new rule requires the citizenship judge to see the person's face as the oath is being spoken. Once the oath is completed and the national anthem sung, the individual can cover her face and begin a new life in Canada as a citizen.

The new rule is part of a wider package of reforms Citizenship and Immigration Minister Jason Kenney has implemented throughout the department.

Last week he announced a crackdown on immigration fraudsters.

On the citizenship front, Kenney has toughened rules since the Conservatives took office, including introducing language tests to ensure would-be Canadians are proficient in one of the two official languages.

Immigrants are also required to know more about Canada and its history than previously as part of the citizenship process.

The latest change is sure to stir a backlash in some quarters as Prime Minister Stephen Harper's government puts its stamp on citizenship and immigration.

Last week, the Supreme Court was asked to rule on a case that pits the right of religious freedom against the rights of the accused to a fair trial.

An unidentified Muslim woman wants to wear a niqab in court when she testifies against two relatives she accuses of sexually assaulting her when she was a child. The accused argue they should be able to see their accuser's face.

France enacted legislation this year that bans niqabs from being worn in public places and other face-covering veils, including masks, balaclavas and helmets. Violators face fines.

    Agree'd, good!

It's still far too easy for people to enter Canada and not amalgamate themselves properly with the country. Companies like ICBC which is a crown company provide assistance in Chinese and Punjabi, that to me is ridiculous. Tax dollars should NOT be spent by a government operated company to provide assistance in anything but the official languages.

This is an appropriate response. France's isn't. You mean to tell me I can't wear my Vader helmet while driving my e30 fighter?

Well, we are "multicultural" and not a melting pot, I guess that's why I can take my Driver's license test in Mandarin or Cantonese or any of 14 other languages.

strange thing is, I have NEVER seen a Canadian road sign in either of those languages... English and French only (and only French in areas that French is prevalent)

P.E Treadeau set up a system where we don't expect people from other countries and cultures to adhere to our cultural norms, hence we have splintered and isolated cultural "nations" around our country, religious headgear permitted in the legions/RCMP uniform, and School kids wearing Ceremonial Daggers in a place that gets sued for the mention of saying the lord's prayer.

there is a troubling double standard here with not all citizens being equal.

this is a good starting point indeed, but I personally feel we should respect the culture of our country, and stop putting such a high priority on defending the rights and feelings of people who choose not to respect it, and are "insulted" by the mention of things like; our national anthem, the Canadian Flag, the picture of the Queen etc., and so forth.

PC? hell no, but being polite and not wanting to offend others is at the point where we are legislating our own demise. look at the UK, they have a big enough issue that Muslims there are talking of instituting Islamic law…

        love it or leave it?

        you bet.

Hahahaha...reminds me of the South Park movie, "No, no no. The Canadian Government has apologized for Bryan Adams on several occasions."

                    America's hat...lol

Yes this almost certainly good news. It's being carried out in Europe, as well I think if it already hasn't. For a while, there were talks about the failure of multi-culturalism and all this between merkal and sarkozy. Since, there has been a good crack down on the burkas.

It's not like not everyone pays a bit of a price for something, but it's like obama said, sacrif- er, compromises must be made.:D

So fucking true. If you want to live in Canada be Canadian, learn our culture and fucking respect it. It's bullshit how many people come to this country and cant't even speak English these days.

On the other hand there are more Mandarin speaking Chinese immigrants than there are French Canadians in all of Canada now.
