Snow tires actually aren't all that bad for Autocross. Better than your 100 billion mile all seasons. My Blizzak's make a lot of noise right at the limit, and have such a low threshold that once broken free you can easily regain grip. The really soft compound also makes for decent drift control.

Us rally people live on the fringe. At the end of the day, there was more fringe on my tires than a John Denver suede jacket in 1978.

    Shakedown autoX

So the Slapdash Racing BMW survived its first shakedown in the form of an airport tarmac autoX yesterday.

Running on 10-year-old bald snow tires, the 325iS did pretty well as far as holding together. I did however, find several 'extra' parts from the build as they rolled around the floor during hard cornering.

There were several spins (unintentional) and a few 'oh sh*t' moments, but all in all, everything stood up well.

My only major complaint was that city bus steering wheel and the 20-minute, lock-to-lock steering time.

I was a full 20 seconds behind a Lotus Elise on the mile course, but hey, he had ABS and, uh, a Lotus.

I'm still relatively new to the scene as far as what engine is what, but I would, if you haven't already, spend the money on suspension reinforcement, skid plates, bash plates, diff covers, etc.

Here's the Slapdash car so far. Still needs a lot, but it's under its own power, all the lights work, wipers, fan, Speedo, etc. This is the first time its seen daylight in months...
