Legality of engine swap for dsp

I'm looking into building a DSP car and I know that in street prepared you are allowed to update and backdate parts that came standard on certain models into other models ( I know that engines have to be traded with the whole drivetrain as a package and not just individual pieces). I'm asking this here because I dont want to get eaten alive on the SCCA forums. Now I have a 91' 318is which I am considering putting a m20 into and making into a 325is to run in DSP, but the thought crossed my mind, that if you can update and backdate then why couldn't I put a M50 into the car and have a 24v motor vs a 12v. So if I'm completely off and have misinterpreted in the rules or you guys don't happen to know I understand. I just want to hear some opinions on the matter.

so even if I found a 91 325's m20 I couldn't put into my car because it isn't part of the 325 line? And if I was to just pass the car off as a 325, then I would probably get protested due to the lack of sound deadening wieght that normal 325's have? Now if I was to swap in the complete m20/getrag 260 with a (is it big or medium case diff) would my car techinically still be lighter than the run of the mill 325?

The 24v motor isn't on the same "line", hence no UD/BD. The M20 is on the same line, but you'd have to swap drivelines as well.

Unless you are planning to compete on a national level it doesn't really matter. Technically it is illegal, so is debadging.

It matters locally as well. Rules are rules.

Agreed. You can get away with it for a little while BUT IMO it's a bad move. You tool around in a car that isn't legal for a few years, then improve to the point you are winning, alot, and everyone will assume you are cheating. Even if you have squared away any issues......Cars get the same stigma even after being sold to another owner.

Ah, I was thinking stock. Sorry!

I would not worry about being 'too fast' and winning over 20lbs...If you are really worried, slap down some material and call it good. Then remove your exterior trim, hack up your fenders etc. and get down below what the car was w/o sound deadening installed. You can use any oil cooler, mounted anywhere. So get a light one (heck, use a single pipe loop)and dump that weight from the front of the car. Since some cars came without one, you could possibly update to the non oil cooler housing and save a little more weight. There are many other things you can do to reduce the weight of the car. In the big picture, unless your car is absolutely prepared to the limits of the class I really don't see a big issue with the m20 swap unless the 318 was a non-sunroof car.
