I run no PS right now and I have for about 6 months. I know about all my options. I would prefer a E36 rack I just don't have the tools to do it right now. If I remember right I need to cut the firewall just a hair because the steering column moves over slightly. I think with the airbag car I don't have to do anything to the steering linkage. There is so much mis-information in the E36 swap thread about airbag cars though it is hard to figure out who is telling the truth or just guessing.

I would definitely not run a non-PS rack thought. My E30 had it and it really sucked at low parking lot speeds and was annoying at high speed due to jitters and vibrations. The PS also makes it far easier to catch slides and control grippy tires.

I'm getting serious with my excuse-to-play-with-cars-for-credit idea, so I'm heading to the track likely around spring break time if the car is fixed by then.

Ideally I'd find a non-M Z3 rack. I love the one I have in my M3.

Have you driven a manual rack? My buddies e30 touring has one - it's a lot of turns lock to lock...I'd go e36 m3 rack....quicker ratio, easy swap. I'm running a 95 with 3.0 lock to lock. With e30 tie rod ends.

I cant find an aibag PS rack on their site.

I have no idea what is involved with an euro non-ps rack into an airbag ps-rack car.

1. remove PS rack
2. install non-ps rack

I don't know much about the internal workings of a PS rack, so after ball joints and steering coupling, I wouldn't know. Also, you can swap in an E36 rack or Z3 rack and keep the PS, and have a quicker steering ratio which is awesome for auto-X

I was finding around 400-500 for rebuilt ones. If I could do a real manual swap I would. E36 rack would be cool too.

The only thing I am worried about is the massive dead zone in my steering rack. If that is noticed it might not pass. I really don't care to fix it either because it costs a fortune for a rebuilt one and a used one is a waste of my labor imo.

what's a fortune for a rebuilt one? I bought a rebuilt acura rack once for $160.

Also, I have seriously considered a true manual rack from a Euro early 318i. Smaller, lighter, easier to turn, simpler, and tougher.
