My b6 passat 2.0t has treated me well enough. It's comfortable and gets great mileage and isnt nearly as numb to drive as some of the other Volkswagens I've driven.

Currently without an e30. Will probably die soon.
The TDI was just never as good in reality as it was on paper. The OMGZTORKZ of the turbo diesel was "okay" but exaggerated. I came from turbo Saabs - my 9000 Aero had enough torque steer to tear your arms off. Same with my Viggen. So the TDI was a bit of a yawn in comparison.
The official fuel economy (29 mpg city / 40 mpg highway) was pretty good, but many claimed wildly higher numbers. I realistically never saw better than 34mpg combined, that's with a majority of freeway commuting miles (granted, lots of Seattle/Bellevue traffic).
140hp at the crank, I had no idea how useless it could be on the freeway. And that garbage redline. Never again. Commuting in my twenty year old BMW is infinitely more satisfying!
