Hey how's it going? I have a 91 with an airbag column and I am looking into swapping a z4 rack into it. I have done the swap on a couple of non airbag cars and I used the Z4 shaft and knuckles and with a slight modification to the shaft it all worked well together. I have read over and over again that to swap a rack into an airbag car requires notching the fire wall. Then I read your post and saw your pictures. Did you use the stock airbag knuckle to connect the rack to the column or did you use something else? When you said that you loosened the nut under the dash and shortened the column, did you just collapse the splines or did you physically cut splines off the column?

The only way I will be replacing my rack is if I can do it without cutting the fire wall and I don't want to swap columns. Thanks!

I installed a z3/e36 rack in my car. I use the stock knuckle and ground down the high spots. I also had to compress the steering column ~1in ish. this was ~10 years ago so my memory is hazy. but there is a metal plate that holds the column in place. I think that can be shifted to allow no cutting during the install.
