Oil pump drive gear and reference sensor

Is the cylinder reference sensor used by the DME at all? Is it required to run? The open gap on the crank pulley will identify what cylinder 1and 6 is but I’m not sure if it’s needs to know which...

I’m struggling to find info on this. I’m swapping my 323i over to Motronic. I have everything sorted except for two things.
1) the oil pump drive gear that I have doesn’t have a flat bearing...
