    M42 Questions (Headgasket and Thermostat)

I am buying a 318. I need to limp the car home and it has a habit of overheating. The radiator hose isnt heating up so i think it is the thermostat. How can i bypass it until i buy a new one? If the head gasket blew, whats the likly hood of the head being warped? the motor runs fine, and it is only leaking water, not water into oil. Thank you.

What year is it? If it is the M42 the thermostat is so easy to change you should change it before you drive it, also when you bleed the coolant system be sure to unscrew the bleeder screw on the radiator or you will have an air pocket which will cause overheating and where is the water leak? and be sure to put a new oem timing chain tensioner in there.

        Hey guess what?

Thermostat is only like 25$ so I would change it and not risk doing damage to the car..

and if it is the head gasket the head could be warped. You dont want to know what it costs to get a head machined.

m42 heads have been known to crack. its not very common but the risk is there.

i wouldnt bother changing the thermo. just open up the housing on the front of the head [where the coolant lines run] remove the thermo and run it with none.
