My engine build for the Baur project

Well, I've officially started my build that will end up the heart of my Baur. I'm looking to come in at a decent 2.8 liters of m20 fury. This is definitely going to be a slow project so I'm really giving no timetable for completion, and it'll be a metamorphosis in progress.

    First..."It's a teasah!!!"

Just a valve cover for the new heart. I had some extra time to bang this out quick.

Here's the important ingredients to my m20 recipe:
m20b20 block - rebored with 84mm of firecracking cylinder(probably take .5mm off the top)
m20b20 conrods - block and rods compliments of the baurs current b20
    m20b25 pistons
m20b25 head - New or reworked internals
m20b25 intake - Larger throttle body a "possibility" in planning stages still
    m52b28 crank

Engine management from a 2.8 chip in the b25 harness. Challenge here is that I want to keep the vacuum advancing distributor in the block, so I'll be working on that. Being able to mechanically advance timing strums a bit at my oldschool heart.

Go to a solid cam ~272 - Schrick is the leader so far in my choice.
BavAuto headers with a good catback.

That's about it for now. Besides the machining work, I'll be doing it all. I'll start another thread for the Baur's project as I get closer to that, but here's a sneak peak at what she's looking like currently.

Bodykit is by Zender...I'm looking for a replacement front

It IS a project after all...Yes, those are rectangular headlights. More to come..

Had an E21 Baur with those same retangular headlights. It was an 80's thing. Was the first of many things to bring that one back to original.

        Please, ditch the headlights.

I hope you keep the square lights.... They make it look exotic

The square headlights are nothing...check out the sweet grill that comes with..

I'm still undecided on the grill and lights.

I don't understand why they went from making some of the most beautiful cars in the world to that. At least they realized their mistake.

I like the lights, kinda ties in with the Baur theme. All sorts of oddities.

if nothing else someone scored some hella conversions for the hideous square light kit

i can give you some tips from when i built my 2.8 stroker, i am guessing the b20 rods are 130mm like a b27? if so i used short flat skirt I b25 pistons to help clear the crankshaft counterweights but even so i had to get the weights bobbed on the crank, they cut mine down to 3.500" above the rod journal, this was a waffleswaffleswaffleswaffles hair from perfect and i had to slightly notch the piston skirts, i think 3.400" would be about perfect, i made a 2nd spacer for the front of the crank when i made the one i am using but it may be a couple thousandths thinner then ideal (worst case the harmonic balancer may rub the crank seal housing, mine is very close but i can't remember which one was thinner the one i used or the other) you make the spacer from the hub that is currently on the m52 crank, i used a lathe to cut it down and keep the cut edge square as that is pretty much a leak point if it doesn't seat on the crank or cam belt drive, you need to knock a little off the back side of the spacer that goes under the crank bolt so it doesn't bottom out on the front of the crank where it fits inside of the hub, get a ohaus crack scale off ebay (mine was under 30 delivered iirc) and take several readings of the rods and pistons to get a average (it may be off a 1/10 or so per weigh, mark the scale so all parts hit the same position, i knocked the weight off the inside of the piston domes and off the rod caps, didn't bother to weigh the rods end for end as the rest of the rod is small and no easy way to get a acurate reading) and balance the pistons to the lightest one and do the same for the rods, my rods were around 4 grams off across the set and the pistons were around 2 grams off

heres my build thread for some pics http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/showthread.php?t=109847

Win, I checked out your build, did you use a single vanos m52 crank or double? Looks like double, but I'm wondering if you had to machine some of the block.

single and nothing was done to the block (it was a 88k super E mile block i stashed a few years ago for a future project that we sold the head off of and i greased it down good to keep rust at bay) i had to nick the skirts on the pistons slightly as they didn't bob the crank quite enough, 3.400" should be enough to clear the flat bottom short skirt I pistons, my crank wound up right at 3.500" and it needed maybe a 1-2mm nick on each corner which wasn't a big deal as i was going to balance them anyway

i dug around and found a pic of a nick'd piston
