    ireland engineering cams ?

with the surge in prices on schrick cams, im wondering if anyone has good reviews on ireland cams; specifically the 272 regrind. freshening up a head on my cabbie, and would like a sportier, but streetable cam......

    thanks in advance..!!

no idea on the ireland cams, but i put a 290 from dbilas in my buddy car a few years ago, and it was still very streetable.

I would avoid IE cams, personally. If you absolutely must have regrind (for cost reasons), look into www.racetep.com. otherwise I'd be looking at catcams, schrick, dbilas, etc.

At the risk of being redundant I would skip on IE stuff altogether.

              thanks for the info

havent dealt with ireland before, so the info provided is appreciated.

used a "genuine" schrick 272 in my last m20 build,..passed californias smog w/o issue.

none of them are smog legal, but a 272 should still be able to pass. If you have something with more duration, you'll have to play with idle speed, timing and fuel to get it to pass at idle, which require standalone management. But you've basically opened pandora's box by that point..

A 272 grind 'might' (lots of emphasis on might) pass Cali smog if the engine is in proper tune. You'd definately want a new 02 sensor, low-mileage catalyst-converter, stock chip, clean fuel and stock spec injectors. According to the regulations in this state, the E30 is considered a "high emitter profile" vehicle so in that regard the chips are already somewhat stacked against us. You start doing even modest tweaks to the M20 and your days-of-fail might be paying a visit. It sucks to be us.

The ways around this (that I know of) is if you know someone at a smog shop who will cheat the test on your modded car or you have the car registered at an address in a very rural area where the testing sequence and standards measured by are more relaxed.

Just one more reason to consider the twin-cam swap if you want more power. At least you know that can be done and legally pass smog.

the motor in question was a 170,000 mile m20 with a fresh head ( seals, guides, 3angle valve job and proper adjustment ) the injectors used were rebuilt m50 17#ers and a jc chip was used along with the original factory cat. all numbers passed well within californias stringent parameters.
i agree with you on proper tuning. i have an m30 running 11-1 compresion, 284 degree cam, 24# injectors and it passed as well. substantial time was spent on tuning it to include a one off chip taking into account the mods made.

so yes,...it can be done if time is taken to tune it correctly.............
