    84' 318 project...PROJECT

Bought this for 300 bucks. Not sure of mileage (odo stopped at 184000) and neither did the kid that I bought it from who also bought it as a project but was to big of a retard to do anything to it. Engine seems to run very strong, although it does seem to be leaking oil (smokes a little at start up and have noticed some oil coming from the botched welds in the exhaust). Its leaking steering fluid from somewhere, but I can't seem to find it. Also seems to be leaking oil from the oil pan and possibly some other areas. The transmission has a linkage problem (posted in the transmission forum) but I cannot really get to the linkage without dropping the driveshaft, which I havent had time to do yet. It will shift into R, 1, 3, 5 sloppily, but fine. When I try to shift into 2nd or 4th it does nothing, seems like I can't pull the shifter far back enough. My question is how easy is it to pull the entire motor and tranny out and just work on it that way? I have a hoist so I wouldnt think it would be too difficult.

The body is straight but had some baddd cancer at the sunroof when I bought it so that was the first thing I took care of, check those welding skillzz.

    and the new roof..

I am thinking turbo down the road, although I have to do mass amounts of research because I honestly don't have much knowledge of turbos. I want to rebuild the m10 so if anyone has a price idea to rebuild myself, chime in for me.

I am going to go through the entire car and replace what needs to be done (bushings, mounts, routine maintenance). The stance is terrible, I need springs soon. In the meantime ill do the free stuff like body work and prep the car to be resprayed, along with gutting the interior and beggining to peice it back together with the color I want plus whatever seats I find on craigslist locally along the way (corbeaus, sparcos, recaros whatever comes up for a good price). My DD is the GMC sonoma-parts-go-getter so it doesnt really matter if the e30 sits, I just want to do everything right.

and oh yeah, the first night I took care of the white grill and sprayed it black lol, I could'nt bare to look at that wackness

OK, found an M50 with 130,XXX original miles, owner says it never leaked or burnt any oil for the year that he drove the car before pulling the motor to do a 350 chevy swap lol.

Anyways, he is asking 400 and is local. Is this a good deal? What can I look for, besides the obvious, on the motor before I decide to buy it?

M50 vanos or non vanos? It's not a bad price either way if there isn't anything wrong with it. M10 to M50 (even NV) is good upgrade, otherwise I wouldn't even bother with M50NV.
