Welcome the 51st state to the US......Puerto Rico!!!!

"HR 2499 — if it passes — would force a yes or no vote in Puerto Rico on whether Puerto Rico should maintain the "current status" of the island. Wait, that's not a vote on statehood. That's a vote on do you want to "maintain the status quo."

See, the folks that like the status quo are more likely to vote for statehood than independence.

In 1998, there were five options on the ballot: Limited self-government; free association; statehood; sovereignty and none of the above. Which one won? None of the above.

But now, the vote is going to happen in two stages. The first stage: Do you want to maintain the status quo? Then a chair is removed. The second vote leaves you with three choices: statehood; full independence or modified commonwealth.

Remember, full independence and modified commonwealth historically get less than 3 percent of the vote. So those options will be the only thing standing in the way of Puerto Rico becoming a state."

Do we really need another state? Really?

Yes but you are forgetting something. If they vote to change the status quo then they will have to vote on what to be. There is P.R. statehood vote as the only other 2 options get little support. Then on to the 3rd vote which will be for their senators and congressmen and a state Constitution. After those are elected all they do is show up to DC and demand to be seated all with out ratification of the congress. This is how Tennessee did it, other wise know as the Tennessee plan. Alaska got its statehood in a similar matter.

Why not just ask them if the want to be a state again?????? P.R. can petition the USA to become a state anytime it wants too. They dont want too but this bill is going to force them in through the back door, and there will be great animosity form many people in P.R. like are there in HI that got duped into state hood that didnt want it and dont want it now.

Why would they? If you read the article, it says they basically get to enjoy all the advantages of being a US state without having to pay any taxes to the Feds.

          It's a win-win for them.

I was being sarcastic. I did read the article, though I admit to having no other knowledge on the topic.

PR will not allow themselves to become a 51st state. They will tell the US to fly a kite!

They have already voted this down twice before.

This is a back handed way to take a outright vote. Because it's not an outright vote. Why don't they just do another yes or no vote. Because if they did, they already know they'd get another "no".

they should have the yes or no vote, but if its a no, then we cut our funding and start spending money on our homeland.

now that im thinking about it, itd be a intresting vote if it were yes or no, to bring the troops home. Only reason it wont happen is the guberment knows well check yes to bring them home.

if were so in debt, why does the us continually give a fuck about everything and anything other than its own economy???

This has been voted down by PR 4 times, I repeat 4 times. This is meant to be a huge power grab by the democrats. The bill is absolutely ridiculous. You have to see who's involved and right now if PR had to seat a seantor and 2 congressmen guess what side they'd be voting for? 2010 and 2012 is not going to be pretty for the Dems and they know it.
