is my 85 318i supposed to suck this bad?

currently getting like 15 mpg or less which is a bitch cus i was hoping this car would save me money. im in 4th gear for even the slightest inclines on the highway, and third just to get up the big ones at a roaring 55mph, pedal to the metal.

ive messed around with the distributor but it doesnt get any better. the slowness doesnt bother me that much but at least get me 30-40mpg, not 15...

    wtf mang

Cap, rotor, wires, plugs, a new o2, and a timing and valve adjustment should be your first step.

What kind of plugs? And you better not say Bosch Platinum +4's.

It can be a big part. Run the correct plugs, not the ones some guy at AutoZone suggests...

                    A quick search here finds...

                    Suggested replacements...

Trust me, I learned the hard way, dropped > $1000.00 on trying to get my 318i to run right, replaced almost every electronic component trying to get a hunting idle to go away.

                        I noticed you're in Boulder. Is your 318i a 2-door?

That's definitely not right. I get roughly 27mpg because I flog it and it needs a tune up as well.

yah creepin, its the shitbox 2 door faded black one you mightve seen. its sweet, just needs to run better.

i might try to do timing and stuff tomorow i guess... it definately sputters a bit like somethings off. fuck, think my timing lights busted though. agggghhh

Yea def needs a good tune up. I was getting around 20mpg driving like a grandma.

I seafoam'd, new air filter, new cap & rotor, new sparkplugs/wires, oil change. Now she runs like a champ & I'm getting about 34 highway. still need to do a vavle adjustment & see if I can sqeeze out another mpg or two.
