I have heard that holding the cams is doable w/o the tools if you are decent at jerry rigging.

Yap but you don't have to mess it up by much and you'll instantly be losing lots of horses...

I've a set but it's a bit long way to ship them :) Bought them from California for 100-150$ so shouldn't be too bad a investment..

Frank, when I get my set back you can rent them for cost of shipping both ways. They are currently with someone else

I will need to do HGs on my B40 also soon... I was hoping to make my own tools (I have access to a manual lathe and mill in addition to the usual stuff like torches/grinders etc)

One more comment.. there are M60's with two different timings "older" and "newer". The newer timing was changed to the engines by BMW after Alpina had timed their engine that way (makes idle smoother etc..)

What I'm trying to say, that when going around with the timings, use the newer timing values (where other side is slightly tilted, not perpendicular to heads).

              I hope someone understood :)

I noticed this when I timed mine, they had a very slight slant to them in relation to the heads unlike a 6cyl where they are perpendicular.

So I'm going to end up timing my m60 as I cracked one of the head gaskets when removing the upper timing case cover.

Jonsku, can you elaborate on where I can find the new timing values? Is there a writeuP as to how to time the m60?

The m/s5x's? They definitely aren't supposed to be perpendicular. Not under factory specs anyway.

There are differences within the M60 range as well. First of them had "perpendicular" timing, whereas on later models the engine was timed so that other head bank / cams were slightly tilted.

So, when buying / borrowing the timing tools just make sure that the other side has tilted angle and you're ok.
