    Lost All Brakes!!

    Hey guys,

Need a little help. I've got an '84 318i that has a brake issue... the issue being that I don't have any! I was driving along the other day, coming up to an intersection and hit the brakes... my pedal went to the floor! I had been driving around all day with no problem! Luckily I was able to pull into a parking lot and downshift till I coasted to a stop. Now I have looked over the brake lines and this is what baffles me. I can't find a leak anywhere and there is no fluid missing from the reservoir! Even as I pump away, nothing at all! The pedal just goes straight to the floor. If I drive it slow around the block and hit the brake, i can feel it dragging the tiniest bit but they aren't doing their job for sure! What could be the cause?

Sounds like your brake master cylinder quit on you.

"Quit" is putting it mildly..more like "blew out" :)

Yep, replace the master cylinder. And once you have the master cylinder out, use a rag on a wire to check inside of the brake booster for brake fluid. If there is brake fluid inside of the booster, you'll have to replace it. Bake fluid will kill the diaphragm in the booster in short order.

A rebuilt booster is okay, but only use a new (not rebuilt) master cylinder.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

How would you bench bleed the master cylinder? Serious question. Just put brake fluid in it?

Put the master in a vice and fill with brake fluid.

Plug the output holes with gloved fingers. (Brake fluid will suck the water right out of your skin, leaving you with a nasty chemical burn)

Then use a punch or screwdriver, and pump the cylinder while keeping your fingers blocking the holes. The idea is that the fluid will push past your fingers, but air won't be able to get back in. It won't take much, but you need to get all of the air out of it.

Cool, thanks. I'm going to be replacing my master next year before track season I think and want to be sure to do it right.
