    DIY Clutch Stop

Found this on e46fanatics and tried it on my car. Just a quick little mod you can do yourself for really cheap but it makes a world of difference

    Install time:
    Less than a minute

    Materials:
~3/8" x 2.5" elevator bolt (your length might vary depending on your friction zone)
    ~adhesive felt pads
~locking nut or washer and nut (optional)

    Total Cost:
About $7 but the majority of that cost came from the felt pads which only came in packs of a kabajillion. But actually more like 16. The bolt and washers came out to less than $2.00

    Directions:
~Reach behind your clutch pedal and remove your factory clutch stop

~If you bought the locking washer/nut, put them on the elevator bolt

~Screw the elevator bolt into the clutch stop hole. Adjust accordingly.
(You'll need to figure out where your grab point is, then give yourself about a half inch of dead space after that to make sure your clutch is disengaging all the way. This is somewhat of a trial and error step).

~Lock into place with washer/nut. This is not strictly necessary but it prevents the elevator bolt from moving around over time.

    Enjoy

I just found out about this. How do you know that the clutch isn't still a tiny bit engaged now that you've decreased the amount of travel for the clutch pedal ?

I always thought that ANY amount off the clutch meant that it's engaged.

I do acknowledge that I definitely let go of the clutch about halfway before I actually start moving so maybe it's no really engaged until then? I've been driven stick for about three weeks so I'm still learning.

Ehehe. This was all the rage back in 2003? But glad you posted it, I'm sure there are a lot of people that don't know about it.

You do it mostly by feel. In reality, there is so much extra clutch travel, that you're just shortening up the end of the travel a bit. I've had one on my e30 forever - and so does 90% of the people on this forum....without issue. If you're really worried, nail the clutch to the "floor" (the clutch stop) and put your car in first, oh yea....on flat level ground. Next, rev the heck out of the motor. If you inch forward, your clutch stop is too high.

I think there is a guy on here selling them for like $10 shipped. It's most likely cheaper then the hardware store route, and better quality. Felt pads? I prefer rubber. IMHO. Anyone have a link to that dude's thread? He seems like a quality seller.

The rubber pad from the oem stop you take out fits onto the elevator bolt, so no need to buy the felt pads. Total cost .89 cents clutch stop.

Normally the distance you can push the clutch pedal from fully released to the floor is half dead space. All this does is eliminate that dead space. Find your grab point by shifting to first at a dead spot, then without adding gas, slowly let out the clutch pedal til your car starts to move. That point is where the clutch starts grabbing (friction zone). anything before that is wasted dead space. when you set the height of the bolt, make sure you have about an inch of travel before you hit your grab point, just to be safe.

Yes the rubber tops from the stock pedal do fit directly on the elevator bolts. I found that out shortly after doing this and thats how my set up is now.

George, the total I spent on this project was $7. Most of that cost was due to the felt pads which only came in packs of 16. Since the rubber pad from the OEM stop works, you can exclude buying those felt pads and the total of these would come out to about $3. All it is, was an elevator bolt, a nut and a locking washer. The only reason I went the hardware store route was because it was significantly cheaper to DIY
