M10 runs great then stalls and won't restart

New issue...please read post number 9

Hey everyone. Just recently picked up an 84 318i. Ran rough when I got it but I knew this and expected some work to get her going.

Anyhow, when I got it the vac line to the distributor was unhooked, hooked it back up and it didnt want to run.

Put new plugs, cap, an rotor in it, then realized the headgasket was bad, (coolant in the oil) swapped the head gasket, all new intake, tb gaskets. New vac lines.

Got it back together and it runs a little better but still rough.

Runs better at partial throttle then full
After driving awhile it'll stall out then not want to stay running after it does that the first time. Will run if you feather the throttle.
Fuel mileage gauge at a 30 mph cruise in 3rd shows 20mpg. Quite low I think. Given the slightest throttle it drops down to like 10.

Now issues I'm aware of...taps quite loudly. All top end noise, but pretty loud tapping. And the sensor on the back of the head by the distributor isn't hooked up. Idk what it is but the wore broke.

    So addressing that sensor tomorrow.

But any other ideas? Planning on taking this thig on a trip soon, need it running right. Haha. I'm not expecting a power house but I can't even rev it over 5k and struggles up top.

    But new parts...
    Cap
    Rotor
    Plugs (Bosch copper)
    Headgasket
    Intake/tb gaskets
    Vacuum lines

does your exhaust smell of fuel?
i can get the 84 318i to get about apx 40mpg at 40mph.
that or my fuel consumption gauge is full of shit

clean injectors, check exhaust for leaks, ensure that your engine cumputer (obgynLOL somthing like that) is ment for your engine.
i wouldnt go nuts thinking of what may be broken until you fix that sensor

Fixed the sensor. No change. Blocked off the cold start injector in case it may be leaking. No change. Eliminated the idle control motor (huge vac leak) no change. Bypassed the solenoid in line with the vac advance, no change there either.

Though now it does stay running. But it won't rev past 4500/5k while under load.

Like I said, valve train does tap. But not sure how badly that would effect how it runs.

Also previous owner put in two new fuel filters. I put in a thing of fuel system cleaner (not sure if they're a hoax or actually do anything but figured it was worth a try). While the injectors were out when I did the head gasket I did douse them with carb cleaner. Tip and all.

But when the head was off, I could still see cross hatching in the cylinder walls. Not bad for 250k miles. So I don't think it's a tired engine.

Ok. Checked timing. It was way off a 0 degrees. Set it to around 10 or 12 and it's a ballsy little car. Runs great now. Few little hiccups but I think a valve adjustment will help that.

But I have an issue still. Drove it around for about 20 minutes and it ran great, then I took off from a stop and first, good, second, good, third stalled out. I couldn't get it to start to see my life. Pulled a fuel line off to see if it was getting fuel. It was. Put it back together. Started right up.

Vapor lock? Any ideas? Also has what looks like a new fuel pump under it.

Could a bad in tank transfer pump cause this?

it needs big fuel pressure. use the cold start line spout to plumb in a guage and see where its at. also a valve adjustment is no biggie. I adjust my valves on my race car 84 318i every week (thats approx every 20 miles of foot through the firewall driving)

I don't have a fuel pressure gauge but ill see about getting one. But I checked and both fuel pumps are brand new units. Idk. Kinda has me puzzled.

Even when it wouldn't start I still heard the pump prime. Like i said, I removed the fuel line letting fuel spray out then put it back on and it fired right up.

Perhaps injectors need to be thoroughly cleaned or replaced. Happy to hear one gremlin has been found

its not always the pumps, our stock regulator would only give 30 some odd PSI. I figured it was just weak after 30 years (it is only a spring) put an aftermarket regulator in and it can be adusted now.
just buy a standard guage 0-80 range is perfect. fittings to attach it to a 5/16 barbed and a section of hose.

I ran my M10 for years with the valves adjusted to .010 and it never wanted to rev past 4k. Last time I set them to .008 and it now revs to redline without effort.

I'd suggest you do this next.

Engine revs great now. Has great power but now this morning it won't start unless i pump the pedal. And even then it still sputters and dies.

Maf maybe? Ill try and get a fuel pressure auge an check it.

I just don't understand how such a simple fuel injection setup won't start. Maf is really the only thing to go wrong.

                            Ok. Update.

I thought maybe somehow the two coolant temp sensors got switched on the front of the head so I swapped them, isn't running right but started right up and starts every time. I drove it around my 2 mile block probably 10 times and it ran decent te whole time. Got back started right up.

So this is telling me the sensors were hooked up right before but my main engine temp sensor must be bad. So, $12 might as well.

                            Will keep ya posted

I'm pretty sure the plugs are color coded on my harness so you can tell which sensor they go to.
