they all need about 5k if you don't get a rolling folder of records with it.

3.6L swap would be the ticket-

the S38b35 timing set replacement is about 1.5K in parts for DIY if you have the tools; Any e28/24M purchased today would need it regardless.

Also beware of ghetto owners not replacing the Iron block freeze plugs with OEM new.

I'm going to preface this by saying that I don't follow E28 M5 prices (or any E28 prices really) and I don't know anything about maintaining an S38.

Is this really a good deal? Don't high mileage M5's come up for sale in this price range every so often? And aren't S38's crazy expensive to repair should something go wrong?

The only positives I see about this car aside from it's low price tag are the fact that it has the same owner for the last 24 years. I assume it's been maintained or it wouldn't have made it as far as it did, but there's no mention of maintenance records. The body and interior look decent but are definitely showing their age.

I'm really curious because I usually ignore "bargain" M5's for fear of having to take out a mortgage to fix them, but maybe next time I'll reconsider.

No, M5s do not frequently come up for sale in this price range. This is not an 325e, the point is not a dirt cheap daily driver to hone your tuning skills on. In my opinion, E28 M5s today are like E30 M3s were 5 years ago. In five more years, finding one in usable condition under $10k will be tough. As long as the engine is properly maintained, s38 is very robust and given this one has made it to 250k with one owner, it is probably more dependable than another with half the miles but no service history.

If this were on the east coast, I'd be figure out a way to make it mine.

I would buy it if it were local... The cheapest I've ever seen an e28 m5 in decent condition(with rust) is 7800. This is literally the avg price of a 5 speed 535is... so for the price of that you can grab an m5.

remind me to never take the opinion of anyone who reads that magazine though. comments are terrible.

In regards to the s38 yes it will be expensive..but this is one of those cars that if you are going to do it, you better do it right. So if cost is even a second thought, this car is not for you.

Yeah seriously, I had some guy Try to off his S38 on me, for my M535i.
He had spent money on just making it drivable,No PM work. Thinking it was worth $8k just because it was a M5.

I miss all my 3 1988 M5's, that I have owed over the years, along with my 1991 M5 that was wrecked just last year, that I sadly parted out. But I did well on the part out, with my 1995 M3 I sold to buy the M5. And the piece of shit M6 I was pressured to buy and sold to my friend/customer since I didnt like it and had some common 6 series issues. The 1988 M5 was my all time favorite bmw, that since that is how I got my nickname or username taking the M5 to speeds of 155mph on the East coast when I was young. Take it from me, since I owned several E28 M5 if they are less then $6k exspect some serious to numerious issues with it. It is rare but you can find decent ones with just a little care but that is like finding Richard Simmons at the playboy mansion with a women in his arms. lol.
