New Member, Just picked up an '87 325is

    Hello!

Well let me start off by saying I'm very new to the E30 world; I've never owned one before but always admired the body style. My brother and some friends owned them in the past and I was always interested in picking one up as a long term project.

My current DD is an 08 Acura TLS 6MT which of course is a very different beast. I am new to the E30 but not to modding or to forums as I am a very active member on Acurazine and my TL is near completion. Its actually my second TL (upgraded from a base model) and I've done basically everything I want to it; coilovers, Vossen cv3's, full A-Spec lip kit, LED conversions, custom smoked heads and tails, blah blah blah) Anyways, its my DD and I am planning on having the E30 as my toy.

I've always been interested in the E30 and have always done quick searches on CL every once in a while. Was doing the same thing when I came across this car. 1987 325is with a rebuilt stock motor, clean interior and repainted black exterior. I went to see it and I just had to have it. I'm not sure if I over or underpaid, but after looking at the work put into it and the fact that I couldn't find any rust, it seemed like a fair price given people were asking 15-2500 for E30's with rust and in need of body work. I picked it up for $3500.

I was given a large mod list with the car and to be honest I don't really know much about many of these parts so any help is appreciated. I'd like to hear some opinions on some of the work done as well; I know some people have differing tastes and I haven't yet picked out exactly what mine is but we'll see. I do know that I like the front bumper (I can tell it isn't stock) and I don't like the look of the rear bumper (I can tell it is stock but it seems to has been painted as the "diving board" bumpers I've seen are usually chrome).

I haven't taken any pics but here is what the seller gave me as well as the mod list.

-Odometer: 266k on cluster (4k after body work and paint)
    - Full engine rebuild - only oem parts are block, head and crank. everything else was replaced and installed by a bmw enthusiast mechanic and race car driver for the E30 class. machine shopped and better than factory specs. this engine was built to run another 250k miles. injectors clean, new plugs, wires, rotor, cap, pistons, rings, valves, cams, powder coated valve cover
    - has bavauto chip installed
    - bilstine shocks, street sport - lowered - 5 years old - approx 15k on them
    - new lower control arms with upgraded bushings (bavauto.com)
    - caster camber kit in front (bavauto.com)
    - fuel filter just replaced
    - upgrade rotors and pads - ebc street sport, cross drilled and slotted rotors
    - custom exhaust out rt side
    - front seats redone in bmw sport red, interior trim is oem bmw sport red
    - M steering wheel, shift knob
    - full body and paint, back to orig black, some trim updated and painted
    - yellow fogs, yellow high beams
    - h4 conversion on headlights to interchangable bulbs
    - new clutch with motor
    - sunroof works, power windows, a/c, power locks, sport seats,
    - new window seals(black)
    - aluminum trim found and replaced with used trim
    - bmp front bumper, E36 fog lights
    - wheels in photo are exact syle but now a different color. black with polish edge
    - Eibach wheel spacers, 20 mm
    - smoked tail lights

Looking over the car I realized I am missing the chrome trim on the passenger's side, the rain channel portion that goes from the side-view mirror to the about where the driver's door ends. Also I really am used to my 6MT TL with my short throw shifter and shifting is basically just a flick of the wrist. I would like to try to replicate that as closely as possible because at this time I'm basically having trouble finding the gears lol especially under hard acceleration. Also I don't like the sort of "custom" exhaust that's coming out of the side. I thnk I want to decide on a rear bumper and then replace the exhaust with a quieter stock one, maybe with extended tips. Thats all I can think of for now. Any information or tips would be much appreciated!

Nice pick up! I love the interior. I think that your car would look nicer with matching bumpers and chrome kidneys. That's just my .

^yes. The wheels, taillights and blacked out bumpers should be removed IMO. But otherwise it's a good start, especially with the clean interior

Thanks guys for your input. I also didn't like the rear tails to be honest.

Any idea where to source different kinds of bumpers and rear lips for the e30? I tried ebay and what not but I want to avoid buying anything until I can educate myself enough on all things e30. I made plenty of dumb mistakes and purchased the wrong parts for my TL so I want to avoid that as much as possible.

Also today I noticed one of my front fogs is cracked; guess I somehow missed that when I was picking the car up. I was told they're E36 fogs.

As for the wheels, unfortunately they'll have to stay for at least the time being until I can find something better. I'm thinking white steelies or something like that. I'll have to learn the offset and wheel specifics for the E30 like I did with the TL. I feel like a total newb since I don't know anything about the E30 but am one of the go-to 3G TL guys on the Acura forums lol.

Looks like a good starting point, always good to see another 87 'is on the forum! It needs the original front valence so bad!

Can anyone help me figure out how to get a cat-back exhaust? I want to go with something OEM fit to quiet it down and I will likely extend the tips.

I need one for my 87 325is coupe and my buddy needs one for his 86 325e sedan. He just got pulled over for having no muffler (he bought the car today and got pulled over right after getting tags by some douchebag cop).

I've checked the typical suppliers (rockauto, advanceauto, partstrain, etc) but haven't had any luck. If someone could point me in the right direction that would be awesome.

Partsgeek sells a good Bosal unit.for like $150 , you might need hangers and a mounting kit. Bavauto Sells Scorpion exhausts which are good sounding but not too loud.

Thanks, I checked those out but unfortunately I don't know what I actually am in need of.

IT looks like the previous owner cut the exhaust somewhere around the middle of the car and had a pipe welded to come out of the side as seen in the pics above. I'll take a picture of the car and hopefully someone can tell me what exactly I need besides the muffler itself.

Ditch the taillights, wheels and rear diving board. Nice valence and interior.
What the hell do people see it TL's?
I want a nice set of smoked MHW's (I know, get it line)

Lol yeah the wheels aren't my favorite and the diving board and tails are also on the list.

The TL is actually a really nice DD, I get 30mph highway, navi, etc etc and it's a fun to drive 6MT.. Reliability is also a pretty big thing for me in a DD

Put the grill and tails back to stock. Definitely prefer this look.

I'll also be getting some ribbed oem style e36 fogs since I hate the yellow and I will probably be removing the tint from the high beams.

The original front end is so beautiful and IMO the yellow doesn't go well with it. Leave the yellow fogs for my TL

Well the car overheated on me the other day. Let me explain.

The car would sometimes reach past the halfway mark on the temp guage. I replaced the temp sensor in the throttle body with a Bosche one. I also replaced the SI board on the cluster with one from a member here who rebuilds them. Put it back together and installed.

I realized the original owner had installed a rocker switch for what he previous owner (not the one who installed it) told me was for turning the radiator fan on "on hot days."

I removed the switch and it had three connectors attached to it. They are now not plugged in. The car ran fine for a while I took it on random 5-10 mile trips in nice 60-70 degree weather.

The other night it began to run hot, the guage was shaky and would reach much past the halfway mark. I never let it get to the red but it was difficult getting it home (stopped 2-3 times) and this was on the highway driving 60mph with the heat on in like 50 degree weather. It would kind of stall but still drive until I stopped and let it cool for 5-10 minutes. Then it would be fine for 5 minutes until the guage reached past half and start to stall a bit and I would stop and let it cool again.

                              Where should I start??
