    1991 318is Manual Trans Fluid

After a lot of searching and reading of conflicting information, I've decided to get input from you. I have a 1991 318is, 5-speed manual transmission. I have seen recommendations for ATF and for MTL, some say based on the manual, some based on the color of the sticker, some based on whether the hex bolts are internal or external.

My general understanding is that if you have the red sticker and external fill/drain bolts that you should use ATF. However, the manual in my car seems to state to use gear oil. As you can see in the pic, the sticker on my transmission looks orange and most of the wording is missing. So, not sure what is really correct.... anyone know?

.... and I answered my own question (with a little help from a friend). After seeing my friends complete sticker I could see it was stating ATF and that the part number on the sticker. I spent some more time carefully cleaning my sticker and found it referenced part #81229400272 as well. That part number is listed as Dexron II ATF. So, no question as to what is required/recommended despite what is stated in the manual.

The sticker is merely there for topping off purposes. All the transmissions were the same, regardless of sticker. If your doing a complete change just go with whatever fluid you so chose, some guys like redline mtl, some amsoil, others liqui moly... Etc. Personally Ive used all 3 and for my track rat settled on a combination of 85w140 gear oil mixed with mtl, though I wouldn't use it for a daily it seems to quiet down the bad getrag rattle I've got going on.
