BMW 1992 325iC: 2nd chance at life TURBO BUILD!

Aloha ya’ll! Long time lurker of R3Vlimited finally became a member not to long ago, and I want to take you on a journey through the build process for my first E30, what was once destine for the scrape yard is getting a new lease on life and a whole bunch of goodies, enjoy!

It all started on a sunny day back in October, it was another normal day at work until a little after lunch. I was taking a look at a co-workers daily driver with some interest; it was set to be my first encounter with an E30. I spent the rest of day dreaming of ways I could find myself behind the driver’s seat; never in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine looking to buy a BMW. Later in the week I had the honor of driving said co-worker home after a injury that left him unable to drive home, I was handed the keys and told to drive very very cautiously and that any moment or fast right hand turn the car would fall apart. With fair warning I drove really slow… The drive was nerve wrecking, there was so many pops, clunks, and eire sounds that made me think real hard about asking to buy it. Somehow the question got thrown up in the air and the owner said he would let it go for $500… I had to make sure he didn’t say $5000. I had to make sure he didn’t tell anyone else, so I drove like hell to get the bank and got the $$, but the owner had to think about it for a night and the next morning we did the deal.
Here she is the day I bought her. Drove hard, put away wet just the way I like it.
1992 BMW 325iC, sport package, and a slush box. WIN!

With the car officially in my name, I knew I had some work to-do. First order of business is to get the vert on a rack and give her a real good once over. With all the sounds she was making on the first test drive I can say at almost all the suspension/drivetrain parts need some attention without even looking underneath. This E30 comes with the sports package which includes the Sport seats; power everything, 13-botton OBC, and LSD in the rear, a dam awesome little car. The exterior paint has been in decent condition most of its life; it lived in under a roof in a garage until the most recent years when the previous owner started parking it outside. The interior did not fare as well with the carpet being heavily stained while the rear seats were torn in various locations, the front seats for some reason have held up better cosmetically but as I found out soon enough had some major problems. The top was the worst thing about the whole car, it was originally a electric top and worked rather well until the day the owner ripped out the electric arm and made it manual for preventative maintenance (aka didn’t want to pay the $$ to fix it when it was going to break). The top itself is in need of some loving itself, there are 4 small holes that were pointed out to me and all have been “fixed” by the previous owner with silicone pray to keep the water out… great. Last but not least is the rear window that seems as though it was at the bottom of a lake for 10 years, defiantly need some new plastic, all the more reason to just keep the top down :)

Beautiful engine shot (it leaked out of everything rubber)

And the best of them all the under shot.. good lord

I knew it needed a lot of work to get it back to its previous luster, but man-o-man was it going to be worth it. First thing on the list was a light teardown of the motor and replace as many worn parts as I could. The biggest thing on my mind was the condition of the Timing Belt, there was no indication that it was ever changed in the last 20 years, so I made the decision to make this a new starting point and by the time it rolls out of the shop it will be ready for 30-40K of carefree miles. This also had me think long and hard about doing a full rebuild and threw the idea in the trash, knowing that I could get away with just the minor things.
On the first drive I noticed the car made a loud clunk as the speed of the driveshaft increased or decreased, within 5min of looking the Flex Disc at the driveshaft was disintegrated as well as both Trans mounts. With both those sorted out the car ran dramatically smoother and I could now focus on the M20.
With oil leaking from everywhere, I had no option but to pull the head and give it a good cleaning while inspecting and replacing the head gasket and every belt and the whole cooling system. Out first are the radiator and all the nasty OEM hoses.

When pulling them I found the car had 1 to many bottles of stop leak in the cooling system, that when opening the petcock to drain the fluid, nothing came out until breaking the down the 2 inches of build up stop leak, I did not want to see what happened when I pulled the block drain plug.. Yup even worse!
Next up was removing the old water pump and tensioner, and pulling the head to get a look at the HG.

Head on the table for some examination by the doctor, and a solid cleaning.

After a bath in the parts washer.

After a solid once over and a new parts Including a head-gasket, timing belt, tensioner, water-pump, all new radiator hoses and new belts all around. She was looking a lot better and I could not wait to start her up and take her for a leak free test drive!

Once the radiator was filled with coolant I called it a night and setup the Vert for a little post surgery photoshoot Dam does she look awesome for being 23 years old

The next day I took her for the most anticipated test drive of the year, first thing first make sure the top is down and the shades are on! She started up perfect and drove like a dream, defiantly need to get the loose suspension worked out but the engine felt like it was running great, and the trans was well.. a autotragic.. Slow is its middle name, but none the less it felt great to have the E30 road worthy and sounding great. Defiantly a new lease on life for the old girl!

Like a good BMW, no more than 2 days of solid driving, I took a hard right hander and just to my luck there was a huge clunk noise, then the whole right front went numb and had a very loose feeling (like driving a vehicle with leaf springs without shocks) upon a visual inspection the front right strut assembly was sticking out almost touching the lip of the fender, some much unwanted camber :O immediately that E30 went up on the lift and just as I thought the nut that holds the top shock mount walked itself off and then managed to strip itself off during my hard right hander, just my luck.waffles

wafflesSo it was time to get some new suspension components, but at the time I could not afford a whole set of shocks and bushings so i got new parts just for the right front including Bilsteins touring strut, Control arm, Bushings, and Upper mount. This is the process that I went threw just for that one side , old strut out.

Old nasty shock out..man was she leaking oil everywhere!

Next was the control arm and lollipop as you can see both were well worn and ready for some new goodies.

The old Top hat needed to get replaced, there is a lot of unnecessary play in that :) out with the old in with the new!

Loaded everything up on the spring compressor and within minutes she was ready to go back under.

At this point it was time to put her back on the ground and sit back and admire your work

After taking it out for a test drive the drive was feeling weird. The car used to bottom out everywhere was very loose, now 3 corners are still the same but that front right is really tight, defiantly shows what a good working shock can do and now I can’t wait to get all 3 switched over to new shocks and hopefully some lowering springs some were down the line.

Well within a day of driving it around I had noticed the thermostat needle wanted to do anything but stay in the middle, within 15min of driving or sitting at a red light the temp’s sky rocket way into the red. I had thought that I didn’t bleed the cooling system enough, well as it turned out that did nothing except make my heater work better, wafflesnext step was take the thermostat out and see if that made a difference and sure enough it did nothing, so i did ye old newspaper trick on the fan clutch and it was BADDDDD. so ordered one up and noticed my fan was missing 2 blades so a new one as well. needless to say with a new thermostat in and fan clutch, no more temp spikes and needle that likes to stay right in the middle.. One happy camper!

Up next... lots more adventures, suspension setup, and a TURBO!! Chooo-chooooo!!

after it serving daily duty for no more then 4 months, I did a valve adjustment because there has always been excess chatter, getting the valves in spec there still was a excessive amount of chatter non the less, drove it for another week before pulling the valve cover and did some thinking... the previous owner lightly mentioned the fact that the car had oil pressure problems years ago, after scratching my head for 20minutes and a few brews later it was apparent that the cam lobes were ground down were they make duration. Making the egg shaped lobe more like a circle and it was apparent that a new cam was defiantly needed, and a overhaul of the head. :(

The heads coming off again.. thank god it gets easier every time.

Ended up sourcing another “885” head on craigslist and it was decent shape most importantly the cam was in great shape. Busted off the cam seal just for PM and a new seal, and spark plugs. About to plop that sucker on the block and button everything back up.

To my joy I found another obstacle to tackle one of the motor mounts separated right at the top! Yikes, wonder how long that has been torn...

        New vs. Old

Buttoned everything up and was ready to drop the head in, awesome little head stand (very easy to make) makes mocking up and bolting up manifolds a breeze!

        Were the magic happens

Head went on like butter and the only problem I had was this little T that broke off from old rock hard cooling lines, and on a Sunday it was a total pain to find after many hours of searching O'Rileys came to the rescue WOOO!

While she was in the air time to change and start fresh with the rear diff fluid and boy did it smell like it needed a little something something

So out with the old and in with some new red line :)

With the new (to me) head, the car is great! Back to stock power and smooth threw out the rev range, im one happy camper! Driving her every day is making me more and more aware of the fact that the suspension needs to be ripped out and replaced ASAP!

Upon doing some research and finding what setup would work best, I decided upon a static setup with the tried and true Bilsteins Sports and H and R lowering springs. I was heavily leaning on going with coils-overs, but since this car is going to see a lot of track and autocross duty I didn’t want to fork over 1K and all the trouble of installing.

I also needed to do something about these again 14” basketweivs , for their age they were in decent condition, and the only thing that I saw was a negative was the spokes were a pain to keep clean, and the dam centers kept popping off on high speed turns :(
Weeks of searching for the right rims second hand turned up with nothing so I decided to buy something that I have not seen run on a E30. I ended up getting some 15x8 Miro 1397 wheels in silver and a 4x100 pattern and for the money they are fantastic, lightweight and cheap to replace! (Fitment is good, but needed 10mm spacer in front to clear brake caliper, rear was perfect) I also had to pick up some new rubber because there is no way used tires are going on my new wheels…

So 4 Falkin Azenis RT-615k for the track and street great grippy tire for the southern California area and because we get literally no rain they serve DD duty as well, great tire!

With the wheels and tires picked out it was time to pick up my springs and wait for my Bilsteins to get delivered. With the car racked up it was time to do some more surgery.
All the old shocks and springs got tossed and replaced with the much nicer Bilsteins/H &R combo, along with new control arms, ball joints, bushing, bumstops, and Strut mounts for the fronts. The installation was very straight forward, out with the old, spring compressor, in with the new, couple bolts here and a couple bolts there, torque to spec and Walla! Front is looking good!
For the rear it was even more simplified, besides dropping the diff and exhaust a couple inches and unbolting the old shock the rear spring just popped out and the new lowering springs popped in.

For the shocks I decided to upgrade to Urethane shock mount and they were also a breeze all said and done the whole project took 3 hours and what a difference a afternoon and new parts can make. With everything buttoned up it was time for a test drive, MY FAVORITE!!

Basically she went from a sloppy 20 year old car to a nice and tight sports car, the difference in the drive is night and day. I can go over bumps with no noise and take a turn without behaving like a top heavy boat, its marvelous and the lowering springs are alright I just wish the front sat a inch lower but maybe over timewafflesJwafflesperfect time for a wash in the sunshine. My E30 literally got a new lease on life and is soaking up every minute

She has been loving her new shoes and the drive is superb, with the current setup and my power levels it is almost impossible to break these Azenis loose its crazy amounts of grip! Everything was going smooth as usual until she started acting up after work with a very random shutter, die for split second and then everything was normal it was weird, but my luck soon ran out as i attempted to make a trip to LA within 15min on the freeway i got bad sputter and she died for good this time:???:
Got towed back home, my first inspection thought it was a fuel pump failure, so i jumped the gun and ordered one up and slithered her in and turned the key to nothing

i was back to the drawing board. did a trace of all the wires and found the CPS sensor jammed between the crank pulley and water pump pulley fully shredded... :puppy: Lucky me it was a cheap and easy fix. made sure to route the wire away from any spinning pulley's haha it fired up first attempt and i was one happy E30 owner once more and i had a good feeling my new fuel pump is going to deliver YEARS of good service :)

I was sick of looking and the sad front valance every morning, it just doesn't look good, and i can tell there used to be something there. I found a upgraded "IS" lip for $100 that would fit the bill and look the business! after a quick couple coats of Wurth "Flexi-Trim satin black paint" it was ready for its clips and on the car it went, smooth to put on look real good!

While underneath the car is was also a opportune time to take care of one the biggest problems with this E30 and that would the well worn, leaking power steering rack, it was on its last breath.

A new unit from Rack Doctor and it was a really great until for the price, the only things i had to find were outer tire rod ends and i was set! Here is both the racks on the ground the old one was endlessly greasy everywhere, after the swap it was another night and day job that was worth every cent, cant wait to take it out to the track and the canyons!

After I get the 325is I have now gets well sorted I think I will be looking for a vert to swap things over to. The cancer has her pretty bad but mechanically she is great.

Post up more pics sir you are really hitting every e30 maintenance item pretty hard!

Nice car, but I don't like the wheels.

It looks like that one of Donna Martin from Beverly Hills 90210 ;)

Thanks for the good words y'all! she sure is a labor of love!

Time for more of the story.

So the vert was looking good and mechanically ran like a charm everything that was sloppy is now nice and tight and i can't say it enough but a world of difference! So in the spirit of adventure i was itching to break in the new suspension and steering rack on a long windy road trip, and Yosemite was the prime destination.

She loved the curves of the fast sweeping mountain roads, and ended up taking a very scenic fun dirt road and got a great photo op!

The weekend getaway was fun on ever level and included endless driving roads so with my newly acquired GoPro i made a little video on a private road to my cabin, if you have a minute take a look kind of corney but WooHooo M20 Powaaaaaa!!!

Nothing like a topless cruise threw the mountains the weather was gorgeous and i believe i fell in love with her! the one hiccup was hitting a tire on the 99 freeway and it lucky only sheering off my new valance clean off :( bummer

With the first long(isn) trip did point out a couple things and those 2 are the drivers seats NEEDs to go! Im a bigger dude and this is a old 20 year old seat and usually these two don't mix, so i went on the lookout for some better Vert Sport front seats. Sure enough within 2 weeks i tracked down a pair of sweet Heated!! sport seats from a 91 vert and looked a whole lot better, here is a what happened when i got home with the seat and did a comparison between new and old, i can't believe how nasty and discolored the old seats were :pimp:
