    Catalytic Converter

    Hi,

As I am sure we are all aware there are arguments both positive and negative for catalytic converters and if the net benefit to our planet is better or worse without them. Yes, they help the pollution coming out of our engines; however, there is mining of the platinum to make them etc. which is not good for our planet. There are also arguments that cars could get better MPG without them if the car was designed from factory to run without them etc. This thread is not intended as a debate on how green they are, or if it's ethical to remove them or not so please keep that out of the response. Thank you.

Again, if the country you lived in did not have emissions laws and your personal opinion was the net result of putting catalytic converters on cars was negative from a green planet standpoint, is it better in terms of performance to remove the catalytic converter from an e30?

Would this make it run very loud? If so, could different muffler or silencer be added to get back to the stock sound without hurting the benefit to performance (if there was a benefit) after removing the cat?

Will removing the cat trigger any errors codes? If so, is there an easy way to get around this code error (via an sensor that tricks the O2 reading). If the cat is removed will it cause the car to run rich or lean or is none of the fueling linked to the cat / O2 reading?

    Thank you for your time.

It's not ethical to remove them. Some people don't give a fuck.

It's not really a debate. Cars that are designed for them should have them, it's not that expensive to put an aftermarket high flow unit in your performance exhaust. I did and I'm a broke ass idiot.

Oh just saw I broke your rules...

OK well basically don't bother removing them because it will make your exhaust raspy and louder and not do anything good for the car.

Thank you for your reply. My searching has led me to a similar belief. The only issue would be if the same cat has been on the car for 25+ years that surely it must be inefficient / clogged so may as well just remove if no laws say otherwise and if your personal belief is the net benefit to the planet is nil.
