    Random BMW E39 question...

    Dear R3V,
I know that this section is technically only for E28 and E34 but I am posting this for my father and hoping that one of you five series guys can help me. I know nothing about five series. I just recently purchased a set of rims with good tires that came off of an bmw E60 and was wondering what is the best and most conservative way to make these rims fit on my car. The rims are 17 inch rims with a width of 7 and 1/2 with an offset of 43 (I believe that it is 43 at least based on the stamp on the back that says EH2 + IS 43) The tires on it are 225/50/17. I tried mounting the rims and they rubbed against the strut housing and wouldnt rest flat on the rotors because of the offset difference. I was thinking that I would buy 20 mm wheel spacers that would decrease the overall offset to ET23 instead of ET43 considering that style 5 rims are an offset of ET20 and fit these cars perfectly. Is this a wise decision or is this too big of a spacer? This is my fathers car and he does not want the rims to be pushed out but simply fit well, drive well, and look conservative. Any insight or help on this matter would be greatly greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Samir

A spacer should solve all your problems. Take a ruler and measure from the edge of the tire to the inside edge of the fender lip. This will tell you what the maximum size spacer you can run. Assuming the old wheels were the same width as the new, having the same offset will result in the same fitment. 20mm spacers will be fine and aren't too big. Just make sure to get hubcentric spacers.

What about the center bore issue? E39 uses a 74.1 Centerbore while other 5 lug BMW's had 72.6.

They make them for just this purpose but I had a machine shop open mine up to 74.1 on the inside. They charged me like $40, no biggie.

Yeah, didn't think about center bore. The spacer would need to be custom made with the proper CB to mate the wheel and the hub. Either that or bore the wheels out to 74.1.
