Most you would pay for an automatic e36 m3?

Found one, it's got 190k, auto, black/black, slicktop, ripped front seat, possible rust bubbles :(, new tires. Needs front control arms, front brakes and who knows what else. Assuming it runs well, what would your offer be on it?

My plan is to buy it as a "cheap" winter beater then swap in a manual transmission and tear it up at autox/track days next season with little regard for its cosmetics. Aside from the price, the fact that it's a no sunroof car right away made me think of it as future track toy. The only trouble is that buying it steals funds away from my 4 other e30 projects, one of which is also a possible track toy. wwjd?

I don't know why everyone gives the SMG such a hard time they do what they were intended to do well and are a nice alternative if you do not want an manual but still want to hit the track from time to time.

I have no idea on prices in the USA, I would be looking at about 12k here in AUS

Not an e46, an e36. 12k is way out of my budget.

okay I'm confused now. E36 never came with a SMG... Or do e36 M3s really go for 12k down there?

E36 M3 did come with SMG, North America did not get it. Condition you describe 2-2500 max.

Nah, all you need are some good winter tires and limited slip dif. A cheap e36 M3 would be pretty nice, really, considering the fun I could have with it during the summer too.

Check the vin make sure its a legit M3 not a 318 knockoff. You can always tell because anything from the M division would have the vin number that begins in WBS, regular bmws that have WBA... If its a legit M3, i'd say 1500-2000 considering its rusty. If its a replica M3 I wouldn't pay a dime for it.
