    Crank no start, suggestions please.

    Hey guys. I've got a 9/95 540i/6.

It's got a crank, pop, backfire and starter drag but no fire up/idle or run. I picked the car up this way. The previous owner said that the car ran before the water pump died, he pulled the battery and when he was done and plugged everything back in he had no response from the ignition key.

So far I have changed, replaced:
484 to 404 DME (with ASC copy chip), bypass EWSII and cut pin 66.
    New NGK plugs
    New 340lph fuel pump
    Crank position sensor
    Cam position sensor
    Reman Bosch II injectors

I've made sure the fuel pump relay and DME relay have power and are functional. The spark plugs are getting fuel soaked, so fuel is finding it's way to the cylinders. I can see that the DME relay clicks on with key on, cycles a few tests (ie; injectors , etc) and then turns off a few seconds later. Normal I would presume?

I added a bit of 30w oil through the spark plug holes to see if a bump in compression could promote a light off, it sounded promising but still just kicking and backfiring without a fire up. Since adding compression was the most reaction I had from the engine I was convinced this engine was toast and I started location a M62B44 for replacement. I then dug out the compression gauge and found that every cylinder had an even 150psi, albeit it took 7-8 cranks to get there each.

I've got .02Ω resistance on the outside pins of each ignition coil and 1.8kΩ on each coil boot.

If this were my old race small block chevy with a Demon carb and MSD distributor I would say ignition timing is way off in no mans land and a simple set TDC and reset the dizzy would fire it up.

In order to change the water pump the previous guy would have needed to pull the harmonic dampener correct? Theoretically there would be a dowel pin in the crank hub as so not install the crank trigger wheel clocked wrong? I've got a new dampener on order, but for now it's worth a check.

Can you guys suggest anything else? If I can get this car up and running I will not have considered the new parts a loss but rather part of the restoration.

    Cheers ~Mykk

A question that's off topic and will not solve my no start, but why is there a resistor in the spark plug boot? The spark plugs have a resistor already. According to my DVOM the plug has 1.4kΩ and the boot has 1.8kΩ. Now I know that with the old distributor ignition wires and remote coil applications with wires having 3kΩ of resistance per foot is acceptable. But part of the benefit of having coil on plug , besides dwell time, is doing away with that resistance....so why simulate having long ignition wires?

I suppose the combined resistance is still less then traditional resistor plugs at 5kΩ to reduce electromagnetic noise. Which just raises more questions.....

Should I just stop questioning german engineering before it drives me insane? :-)

Consider swapping out your MAF. No signal from the MAF will cause over fueling. If you have spark and you already did Cam and Crank sensors timing is correct barring timing chain slippage (very rare). You obviously have fuel if you have wet plugs so to me the most likely issue is incorrect fueling = MAF.

If you smell gas while cranking it's probably too much fuel.
If he swapped out the water pump, and "suddenly" the car wasn't starting, there's probably something he wasn't telling you.

^This....perhaps he hooked the battery up backwards, if he bothered at all to disconnect before swapping the pump. Or he arc'd it with a wrench while working. OR he forgot a connector, a ground, or disturbed a connection while working.
