    Bumada's S5x Project E30

Hey guys! I'm a month into my e30. I bought her a with the plan for a semi project build and hopefully keep me occupied and happy. I'm coming out of an e46 M3 that I bought straight out of college. It was such an amazing car, but I was missing the joy of putting in some wrench time on it. It was too difficult to modify as it was my only vehicle and was just too expensive for me to do what I envisioned for it. So I picked up a 2001 740iL, sold the M3, and then bought the e30.

Through high school, my dad and I restored a 1979 Honda Civic CVCC from the ground up, and that's what I really want to do. It'll take some time, but I also have a ton of free time. This time, it'll be my choices and my money.

Now onto the e30 stuff. I picked up this car a few weeks after selling the M3. I tried to be more patient and selective, but this one popped up on craigstlist located only down the street. Definitely not my first choice in paint but other qualities really grabbed by eye. Clean body besides the front bumper, one dent, and rust under the battery. No biggie. Paint is faded, but it'll get repainted during this whole ordeal. The major selling points...the interior is absolutely amazing. One minor dash crack and everything else is almost prestine. Also, the PO had all the records sorted out, over $4000 the past 3-5 years. He even had an excel spreadsheet of the miles since the odometer stopped working. All said and done, negotiated to $2900 and the project begins.

Here are my plans. I just purchased a set of Fortune Auto Coilovers. Next will be wheels and then start piling up the swap parts for an S50 or S52 swap (whichever low mileage motor I find first, preferable S52). Looking to make the swap as clean as possible. Nothing ruins a car than a hack job swap. Will piece together things as it feels necessary such as sway bars, brakes, interior, etc. Eventually it'll be painted.

This will be a very slow moving thread, don't expect things to be done in one weekend. Once I get the motor, I'll have to do it at my parent's house 3 hours away on weekends until I rent a place with a garage. Here it is at it sits.

I just did the axles and wheel bearing a few weeks ago to make it driveable. Also added an aftermarket stereo as the oem one didn't work. The greatest discovery was that the electric antenna worked!

Oh yea? I'm a little worried that it might be too much power for an autocross car. Maybe I'm just used to driving that little civic in autocross. Of course I don't plan on it being a competitive autocross car, and will merely take it there just for fun and learn how to drive it on the edge.

Nahh the s52 isn't too much for the car at autox. It is a blast. You won't regret it.

Oh great! I'll be sure to beat up on it before I get it all painted.

Welp, as I said in the original post, this will be slow. I've only done some small things in the past month. Right now I'm just driving it to work everyday and saving on gas. I'm still waiting on the Fortune Auto coilovers to arrive.

I changed out the window switch on the passenger side.

About a week ago, I was getting a very loud screech from the rear end. I was worried it was something in the diff. Quickly learned that it was coming from the passenger rear wheel. Took off the wheel and this feel on the ground.

Seems that this shield rusted all the way through and fell in between the wheel and the rotor. Easy fix.

Also placed an order for a Nardi woodgrain steering wheel, hub, and shift knob. Still waiting on the steering wheel as it was backordered.

My timeline for the motor was pushed up quite a bit as it'll look like I'll have the extra funds for it. Hopefully I'll be able to find an S52 in September or October.

Small update. Finally got the Fortune Auto Coilovers in the mail. They are absolutely gorgeous. I'm not really in a huge rush to put them on as it'll be look silly slammed on bottle caps. I'll be spending 6 weeks in Denver this summer so my car will be spending that time with my Dad. I'll take apart the suspension before I leave and have him get them welded up for me.

Also, I finally got my Nardi Deep Corn 350mm steering wheel in the mail and installed that today. It looks gorgeous as well. One complaint is that it's a stretch to hit the turn signals and wiper blade arms but I can live with that.

I don't know how much I'll be getting done the rest of the summer. Hopefully the suspension will be on and then I'll find some decent wheels to throw on there before I get some that are more permanent. The plan is to buy a motor in the September timeframe. Anyone selling one soon?

Here's what I'm doing this weekend. I just had the fenders rolled. I'm about to take off the front suspension and have the struts cut and the coilovers welded. Then putting on the wheels and tires.

I got the tires mounted and the coilovers welded. Next step is to put everything on the car and see how it fits.

Finally an update! After being in Denver for 6 weeks on business, I was able to install the coilovers, wheels, brakes, and wheel studs this past weekend. I regret not taking pictures throughout the process, but I also hate stopping and picking up my phone with dirty hands.

The Fortune Auto coilovers are absolutely amazing. You can go pretty low while keeping the travel in the shocks. I love the way how everything turned out. I have a friend that was able to weld the lower coilover sleeves for me. It was a bit intimidating at first when I learned that this needed to be done with coilovers. It actually wasn't that difficult and installation was very straightforward. The most time consuming part was perfecting the ride height. One complaint is that the rear is at the absolute lowest setting. I had to remove the adjusting collars to even get it this low.

Next on my list is sourcing an s52 and piecing together the swap.

Hows the quality of the coils?
Im planning to sell my springs and struts and move on to the big boys before my turbo set up.

Top notch. Very solid construction. If you don't know much about Fortune Auto, do some research. They hand build every ordered set of coilovers. It takes close to 6 weeks to get them after being ordered, but I have absolutely zero negative things to say. They also shock dyno each one to ensure quality. I had a bit of fun on an off-ramp this morning and I didn't feel like I was at the limit at all. It's very smooth and comfortable feeling to be able to drive every day at full soft. I want to play with the dampening to see how it feels.
