    E36 M3 muffler on E30 325i?

This may sound like a dumb/stupid question.....or not (hopefully)

but i love the sound of the E36 M3...... 8)
and i see their mufflers on sale on Turnermotorsports, Roadfly, etc.......

now could our stock exhaust have the E36 M3 muffler welded on?
that could make the system sound really cool, without using dynamax mufflers!

anyone want to give a shot on whether this will work or not? if you think so, i might give it a go.

(hey, if no one ever asked, we would never know what was pssible, so don't give me a hard time over this query!)

    p.s. I only want a lil meaner tone, i don't want people to think i really have an E36 M3, so this isn't for RICE......and i don't think it'll make ANY gains

yes, you can weld any muffler onto any system you want, provided it fits in there. i have seen the e36 m3 box done before, but i dont know of the benefits, either aural or performance wise. keep in mind that motors have very different tones, so chances are an m20 will sound nothing like an s/m50 regardless of what mufflers are used.

So I gather that you will just be using the muffler, not the whole cat? If so where can you get just the muffler for an m3? Linkage would be nice.

oh man, i just met a new bimmer buddy who has a '92 325i with a later M3 exhaust... that thing sounds SICK. At high rpms it just makes the most beautiful sound... i was very envious.

Then, we did a couple drag runs and my '87 325is with an AT kept up :D he was only 1/3 car length in front of me the whole way. I guess the weight difference helped me.

I think Fred is planning on doing this. you should ask him about it, but I'm pretty sure anything is possible, you just need to take it to a muffler shop. HTH,

I would not do it due to the shear weight of that muffler -- it is one fuckin heavy piece.

the stock m3 system right? i know eurotuner spoke a lot about the weight savings of aftermarket......

i don't know...... i kinda like the stock sounding exhaust, just want it a lil louder / deeper

as for deeper, what about adding a muffler in as resonator in place of the cats, like Ted did.....how was that done, cost? That would be pimp......

                Bill, you da man!

Jordan, explain to me how that works, I am curious.

Matt, the car has stock exhaust manifolds and downpipes, but its got 3" piping from then on, and I have a Borla XR-1 race muffler as a catalyst replacement and a Borla Turbo muffler as the exit muffler. It sounds mean  All due to the help of Apex Engineering, who gave me solid advice on which exhaust to go with and got the parts to me promptly! Thanks Apex!!

i'm interested in how you did your exhaust..... stromung is good......but not exactly the sound for me.

how much did this cost about?

and you have single 3inch piping? i'm curious on the aural/performance effects of swirling two jets of exhaust into one. maybe nothing, who knows.

Could i go from the headers, merge into one, go single tube through a resonator or ..... race muffler...... then use a y-pipe to put it through the stock muffler, for different sound and stock look.....

i'm trying to think this out...... but i could use some help with it

I think you should stay with yor stock exhaust system, and maybe add a aftermarket muffler if you please. You dont have any mods that would warrent having a custom bent system.

                    true true ( )

i started by asking if the E36 M3 muffler would fit.....i shouldn't move much further than that.....most likely i'll just get a muffler on there :?

but Ted's exhaust has definately gotten my gears turnin.......
i'd love to design my own custom exhaust if my engine ever does warrant an increase in exhaust flow, one can only hope  8)

Yup, I'm scheduled for this on Friday. It's not a direct bolt-on job because the pipes have to be bent and the E36 hangers (or some custom ones) will have to be used. Trent is right, it is pretty heavy, but I wanted a semi-quiet exhaust with straight tips and so far, there is none available for the E30.

If you want to have it done, take it to a good muffler shop that is familiar with custom work. Otherwise, if you go to one of those run-of-the-mill shops they'll tell you it can't be done and will give you funny looks until you leave.
