    Head Rebuild.

Alright, well i'm still on my saga with my head. One broken rocker arm, and parents won't let me take off my head, so i gotta have someone else do it.

People have advised me that if one broke, the others aren't far behind. And i definately plan on owning this car for at least 4 more years, so it'd make sense to fix it right this time.

The camshaft seems a lil worn. So i want to replace it, with msot likely a 278/274 with 11.2mm of lift ?? Nothing too wild...... (I'd replace it anyway, as i have to go through the trouble of taking the head off anyway, and want some satsifaction from doing it.) 8)

Alright, so what all parts should I have replaced? I'm doing all the rocker arms. I've read that the hydraulic lifters should be done with cam - how many are there - 12 right?

    What about:
    Rocker arm shafts?
Valve seam seals - most likely i will.
    Clean valves.
Valve springs? - Performance replacements? $$?
    Retainers?
    etc. etc.

In case you're wonderin, i did check my headbolts and they are the flawed variety. And i did get a new set.

I'll be glad to finally get this over with. :) I'm prepared to spend some money to fix this right, but don't want to get carried away. So please advise me on what should be done when i have my head off.

P.s. my future plans in the coming years include 9.7 CR pistons, possibly 85mm bore, will a 278/274 compliment this well? (I'm not into strokers that much)

I prefer pneumatic lifters. Others like solid lifters. It is all what you can fit in that M20

    Btw: M20 head doesn't use lifters :D
Don't forget the good things Hitler did.

Yes... perhaps his parents are right about not letting him do this himself.

rebuilt your head to stock man, leave it as that. You are looking at $3-400 for labor and $500 or so in parts. You have no serious plans for your motor, so there is no need for a aftermarket cam

ok wait hold on.... dont you have just one broken rocker arm? just replace the one rocker arm, and call it done. There is no sense rebuilding the head so you can "feel good"

shit, my fucking bad guys. I must have accidently been reading about M50 cam swaps, and scene a recommendation to replace hydraulic lifters, they have them right? Or maybe i was just reading a shitty site with bad info. My fucking bad, i guess i should drop out of school and study up everything on my E30. I don't know everything, so i was asking for some fucking help. :finger:

As far as rebuilding to stock, fuck it. I'd much rather spend double and owe more money than just put it back to stock. I do have plans for my motor, not crazy, but i'm hoping to get 85mm 9.7 CR pistons, which would then benefit from a longer duration cam. (I most likely won't go stroker, just high-comp bored engine)

If it costs more money to rebuild a head for performance i'll do it. I'll be happy i did in the long run. And who cares if it will cost me, I have a job that pays very well during school.

Unless i can jerry-rig a way to pull the rocker arm, i have to take off the head. It's been said many times that one rocker arm broken can mean more are to come. As long as this is true, then it'd be a preventative move to replace them all now. Why go back in a while and have to pull the head AGAIN if another one breaks.

        Alright found out the misunderstanding:
        Hydraulic Lifters

Whenever you replace the camshaft, it's a good idea to replace the lifters as well. As with any moving parts, they wear down, so installing a new camshaft with old lifters can cause premature wear on your camshaft.

        Hydraulic Lifters
Hydraulic Lifter for Intake & Exhaust, 318i/is/iC (1991), Each
        BW-11-32-1-734-341 $13.50
Okay, so i misread......big fucking deal...... maybe you should get a life (or a job) and stop pointing out and making fun of mistakes made by ethusiants.

Your mistake here is thinking we are pointing your lack of knowledge, when in all reality we are just stopping the spread of the internet forums worst enemy.

          MISINFORMATION.

fucking chill man, do whatever you want. If you think its a good idea, you are obviously decided on the matter, so why are you posting?

i want to know what all parts should be replace with a proper head rebuild.
I was basically seeing if i should add any parts to the list of the parts i'm looking for. Valves, rockers, guides, stem seals, springs? retainers?

I mentioned the aftermarket cam to see if i need any special consideration in the rebuild.

 i'm really sorry if i misconstrued what you guys were trying to say. :?
