I have pulled my m42 from the car I just bought. None of the belt tensioners were in and I had to pull the camshafts and other stuff anyways (you can see my other threads one why that is). I have read and understand how I am supposed to align the cams for when I put the timing chain back on, but I have no idea with the engine on the engine stand how I am supposed to know where tdc is on the crank.

See the last diagram in my first post.
There is a notch in one of the teeth on the crank damper wheel, and it aligns with the arrow that is cast into the front of the oil filter housing. Additionally, you can (and should) pull plugs 1 & 2 and stick a wooden dowel down in there and make sure that there is an 81mm height difference between pistons 1 & 2 since it can be hard to align the notched tooth with the arrow.
