    2002 Booster with stock brakes??

I'm curious if anyone has mounted the 2002 booster with a stock e30 brake setup. Obviously I plan to add a BBK but planned to just run the stock brakes at first.

I've seen that people have a positive experience using the 2002 booster with a BBK installed but I'm curious if anyone has used it on a stock setup and can comment.

I've only driven the car around the neighborhood and my first impression is that the pedal assist isn't very strong. I know I have boost because when you start the car you can feel it move the pedal, but when I'm driving to lock the brakes up I have to stomp on them. Like really really hard. It doesn't feel safe for DD. I'm wondering if this is normal with this booster, the added weight, and stock brakes.

Before I start throwing brake kits at the problem I want to make sure everything else is working properly. I honestly can't remember if the brakes on this car were good or bad. I bought it, drove it around the block, and pulled the engine out. I don't remember feeling like they didn't work but that doesn't mean they were great to start with.

My car is a 318is but looking on Realoem I believe it has the same brake setup as a 325. Pads look good. Brakes are bled and super firm. My 2002 booster is old so that could be an issue but it definitely is holding a vacuum.

One possible problem is how I have the vacuum lines hooked up to the booster. I assume the item that has an electronic plug is some sort of valve that regulates the airflow to change the amount of vacuum. I have two plugs near it off the harness and I've tried each but neither seems to make a difference. There is also another plug not being used on the other side of the car. Any idea which of these three are correct for the vacuum hose?

Here is a pic with all three:

Here is a closer pic of the one on the passenger side:

Here are the two that are near the booster:

Problem solved. I had two issues:
    1. The booster was leaking at the master cylinder due to a faulty seal
    2. Once that issue was fixed I found out that the booster itself was faulty

Sent it off to Ireland Engineering and they had it rebuilt. All is well now.

did you ever figure out what plug goes exactly where? I went out to my car to try to offer guidance and you're right....two plugs that look exactly the same that could go in two different places even based on their length

I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one. I've hooked both up and can't seem to tell that it makes any difference. I am still hunting down an issue that is causing my idle to fluctuate. After I get that taken care of I'll test both plugs again. I assume this plug wouldn't be causing the idle issue - I have two more likely other causes:
        1. Exhaust leaks before the o2 sensors - I have the headers back off...just waiting for new studs to arrive.
        2. Bad MAF - I have the new one but I want to fix the exhaust first before I plug in a $70 part that might not be the cause.

Assuming that's an E46 M3 harness, neither plug into that solenoid. It's supposed to go down the transmission tunnel. One of those is for the reverse light switch, and the other (with the blue and green wires) is for the so-called "gear recognition" sensor.

            Interesting. A couple questions:
            1. Could that solenoid be causing my hunting idle? I've eliminated nearly everything (no vacuum leaks, new MAF, no exhaust leaks). It has to be this, or the fact that I didn't install the stock MAF screen on the typhoon intake....
            2. I'm guessing the third plug coming off the main wiring harness on the passenger side of my car is actually meant to attach to that solenoid. Is everyone just extending the wires like you did for the MAF?

Could very well be. If I remember correctly, that solenoid is usually energized (not allowing flow), and is open at specific times. So in your case it's constantly open. MAF screen could also be impacting it (does the behavior improve with the MAF unplugged?)

If I'm imagining it right, that's probably the right plug. The E46 M3 has its harness on the driver side, so the wire lengths are based on that position. I'm not sure what most people do, but extending it should be easy enough.

Yes - if I unplug the MAF it idles perfectly. I ordered up a screen on ebay and will extend that plug over the next couple of days. Thanks!

Looked again - looks like I extended some 2 prong plug that makes a right angle at its connector. The two wires are red with white stripe and yellow dots (this seems to be switched 12v or at least was in other locations on the harness) and a yellow wire

I don't remember it being a right angle connector, but those wires sound right. Should be switched 12v (so hot when ignition on) and a DME-switched ground (the yellow wire)
