91 318is Slicktop BBS überkaro LSD 4.10 need some help

So I bought this car 3 years ago from an old chap. In the last 3 years I drove about 8000kms with it. I did nothing with and I decided to sell it because I was too scared driving with it (they already scratched it on the parking lot). I always had other daily drivers on the side

Last week I sold it but at pick up they guy backed off because of some oil leak, good for me because I already regretted selling it.

So I decided too keep it and just drive it when the weather is too shit for my bike.

    What do we have
    91 BMW 318is
    only 156000km
    überkaro
    AC
    4.10LSD
    Slicktop
Euro version with black headliner , mtech 1 steering wheel and shiftknob
    BBS 7x15

    What to do?

The steering rack was leaking so I removed the belt and drove without power steering. Time to tackle this and I ordered a yellow tag steering rack from an E46 with e36 Lemforder outer tie rods

The m42 is leaking some oil. I suppose its the oil filter housing gasket because I could find oil all the way up the end of gearbox, probably blown by the fan.

While searching for this leak I discovered it was leaking gas on the starter, probably the rubber hoses under the intake are leaking.

Since I bought it the M42 ticks so I changed the timing belt tensioner 3 years ago but it didnt do anything. Its ticks when the car is warm. When I start it up sounds good but when the oil pressure changes it starts ticking.

Any tips about tackeling these problems the most efficient way?

The fuel hoses are easy. Just go to your local hydraulic shop and inquire about fuel line hose. 13mm exterior, 8mm interior diameters. They will sell it by the meter. Get some worm clamps as the ones on there require a special tool. A pair of shears on the crimped part to release them.

Next time you change your oil go ahead and remove the filter housing and change the gasket.

The steering rack will be the most difficult part. Specifically getting the part of the steering knuckle open enough to slide onto the shaft of the rack. Take your time, wear some mechanics gloves so you don't bust your knuckles.

The ticking could be a lot of things. Injectors will tick loudly sometimes. Put the handle of a long screwdriver in your ear and the metal tip on various components to determine where the ticking is coming from. Likely the injectors.

Thanks, yeah it has some nice OEM extras

It always had 5w30 but in Januari I changed it to 10w40 and I must admit after that I noticed the leaks. And also sometimes the oil pressure light switched on while driving, it turns off after a second. I drove the last 9 months maybe 250kms with it

will do, since I'm doing the oil change I will take off the oil pan for some further inspection

Damn I removed the oil pan just to check If there was something in there.

This is a M42 engine with about 156000km thats under 100000miles. And 6 bolts are missing. probably from the upper oil pan. This is probably the reason that its leaking oil.

Could this be the reason of the ticking?

Clean car! I am not too familiar with M42s (only dealt with m10, m30, m30,m50,m52,m60 and m62 lol), do they have upper oil pan bolts that mount on the inside, or could these also be oil pump bolts ?

That is a somewhat common problem with the M42. Those 6 bolts are for the upper oil pan, as well as the oil pump. When they fall out, I can impair oil pressure and will definitely cause that ticking sound you are hearing.

Put a small amount of blue Loctite on those bolts and reinstall them. Your ticking issue should probably go away.

If I remember correctly, those looks like the oil pan bolt. I just did an engine swap from an e36 m42 to the e30 318is and I dont remember any bolts coming from any other parts down there besides from the oil pick up tube and the upper oil pan. The timing chain/tensioners will most likely rattle than tick if somethings wrong with it.
