    Trans Removal

So this is my first time removing my transmission and it is a little over whelming. Bentley manual says I don’t have to remove the starter, but it looks like I do??

It will make life easier to take the starter off. Disconnect the battery before messing with it though. Some of the exposed connections on there are NOT fused, and if you short the 12V to ground on the connection lugs, bad things will happen.

Pulling the tranny is fairly easy. The top E-head bolts can be managed by putting 3-4ft of extensions together and running them along the top of the tranny. Also, make sure that the 10mm hex bolt which holds the sheet metal cover thingy to the transmission is removed...it's an easy one to forget. Well, this applies to the 318iS anyway, not sure about other cars. It is up on the front passenger side of the bellhousing.

Also, as the manual probably says, do NOT let the transmission sit on the input shaft unsupported. Save one of the bigger top fasteners for last, and have the tail of the tranny supported with a jack when you break it loose. There are guide sleeves in the back of the block which will hold the weight of the front side, but you want the back supported so it is not putting a bending load on the input shaft. Then summon your strength and get your body under the tranny, grab it and basically bench-press it as you slide the input shaft out of the clutch disc.
