    Looking to buy 88 325ix

Looking to purchase a 1988 325ix 5 speed with 254,000 miles. The current owner has replaced quite a bit of parts and has receipts to show for it as well as some as the P.O. before him. The car seems pretty clean for being in NY. The only problem with the car is it stalls out after warming up. The owner said he replaced the fuel pump before it started actIng up. The Stomp test produces the code 1211. ( dme control unit fault ) so I’m wondering if a couple hundred $$ in sensors and a 173 pin dme with the 1k resistor or even just another 153 pin dme would get it up and running again or if it’s not worth the headache. Guy seems to know his stuff and not just trying to dump off on someonelse as he first stated he wouldn’t sell until he fixed the stalling issue. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Might have mentioned it was running a Miller MAF conversion...

Well the driveshaft is not connected, that's gonna give you running issues.

Get rid of the MAF conversion first and get it running well stock. There's a good chance it's caused by the MAF kit.

Otherwise, these engines are really simple. Even if you had to replace every single sensor, there's only like.. 4. lol.

Thanks for the info. Anyone happen to know where to find a good 173 dme? Would the Miller conversion throw the dme off causing the code?

Hey spoke with this guy regarding any leftover ix parts a few months ago. Its been on the FingerLakes craigslist for some time now. About 10 months ago he was asking the same price for it with a burnt out viscous coupling. He told me that he rebuilt the transfer case himself and it is apparently in good working order.

I think I may have a spare MAF if you are interested.

I would just need to locate a dme and chip for it, and probably the oem maf. Any ideas on where to find the dme?

Neither of these parts are unique to the IX, so post a "Wanted" ad in the Classified section and/or watch for a part out of a wrecked car that was running at the time.

You need to have a "173" DME or higher for better test capabilities. Like Nando said, get a stock one (not a chipped one) for now until you can get the engine running correctly.

Stalling when warm could be caused by a number of other issues as well, but convert back to the factory components first and go from there.

I should find out exactly what dme is in the car, and would it need to be specific for a manual? I’ve read the articles about the 173 with the 1k resistor. I’ve found some forsale on Parts Geek and Bavarian Auto Sports but am not sure with all the mixed reviews. He also said he has another maf from another car.

Auto and Manuals use the same DME. The 1K resistor is for the early ix ABS - you can put it on pin 19 of your C101 as well, but you may or may not need it at all. This was actually a common dealer repair with the '88ix even when it was new/stock.

Ah that makes so much more sense. Every post about dme’s turn into arguments it seems. Thank you for the clarification!
