finished build, time to choose a turbo. suggestions?

Hey guys i just finished building my m20b25 engine and I need to choose a turbo. I was hoping you guys could give me a couple of suggestions. Ill be running ms, mls hg and arp studs, 8.8:1 compression. My goal is to shoot for 400hp.

I know this has been covered a million times and im sorry for bring it up again... but I'd really appreciate some advise.

Is there a list of turbo options that people are running?

I have searched the forum for a couple hours now and found a few good options; however everyone keeps telling me to go to e30tech.com, but their website has been down for the last week i have tried to go on it.

Precision 6262 t4 seems to be a really solid option, but its expensive. Id rather not, but if i must.. Really want something used for dirt cheap like a holset hx35 and rebuild it if need be.

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Try a 5858. nice spool for that power level

A HX35 will be more than enough for 400hp. Keep in mind with 8.8.1 compression the T4 6262 will spool later depending on what size exhaust housing.
Need a Turbo manifold? We have them in stock- Click here---> http://rapidspoolindustries.com/

You said it yourself... hx35 I’m good condition or rebuild one. Dirt cheap and reliable.

What do you guys think about these cx racing kits for $780 with a Chinese gt35, manifold, down pipe and waste gate?

I think right now the hx35 is probably more expensive all said and done. All other manifolds are like $500 minimum other than this cx style.

          So hx35 $350
          Manifold $500
          Random nonsense and welding $150

It might be better to just buy this kit, run the turbo until i find a good hx35 or better and swap them out. maybe even sell the old turbo for $200.

I can’t speak too much on the cxracing manifolds but I’ve been tempted by the prices too. In the end I went with a Jake B manifold (same as Good & Tight) but I have a 24v swap so can’t say much there for the m20 manifolds. I’m running an hx35 however and for the price you can’t beat it. Got mine on Craigslist on a Cummins part out for $250 with no shaft play. Planning to run 15/20psi when it warms up here in Cleveland.

Also keep in mind the CX racing downpipe may be a 2.5” and not 3”, which I would suggest if you’re aiming for 400 wheel. The wastegate is most likely cheap as well, but again, can’t speak there.

The cx manifold is crap. Mine started cracking within 5000kms. Go for a blunttech or RSI.

appreciate the help guys ended up ordering a bluntTech Manifold

I just found a local hx35; however, it has 200k miles on it. Are these difficult to rebuild? and if i mark the fan when i remove it, do i have to get it balanced?

Everything I read about HX35's say that they're component balanced.

Mine had additional balancing done at some point, but both wheels were messed up and I replaced them with new ones. I didn't balance it afterwards.

Rebuild kit is like $60. The only problem I had was with the tiny snap rings inside. You'll either need to get creative, or buy some tiny/long snap ring pliers.

If you have the compressor housing with the massive circlip, don't use the big oring from the rebuild kit...

If you're not hell-bent on an HX35, look at Borg Warner Airwerks stuff. I switched from my HX35 to an S257 SX-E and I'm really happy with it.

I know I've been kinda running this thread in a few directions, but I'd appreciate all the insight I can get.

                      Head Gasket Question:

I was ordering an MLS head gasket today and they only had 85mm bore size. If I remember correctly the stock bore is 84mm. VAC only stocks the MLS 85mm x 0.120. My head has been machined so I wanted a bigger HG while also lowering compression.

That's when the sales guy told me about the Cooper Ring - Cutting Ring Head Gasket -
                      HTML Code:
                      https://store.vacmotorsports.com/cooper-ring---cutting-ring-head-gasket---bmw-m20-p3632.aspx
These are only available in 85.5mm bore and 0.080" thickness. So this would bring me back to stock compression and be able to hold higher boost; however, the bore size is too big and I don't get the compression benefits.

What do you guys think about the gasket bore size difference and which, if either should I purchase?

Also, i appreciate the turbo suggestion. I'll take that into consideration.

You’re actual internals won’t hold as much boost because of the compression ratio though. The head gasket itself will be way way stronger compared to the MLS, but you’re CR is still a bit high for the amount of power, unless you’re going with Ethanol it Meth of course.
