    *fixed* Code 1261

Driving home my check engine light tripped and the car started bucking in gear. The idle would bounce 500-2000 sometimes hold 2000 and then sometimes it would randomly rev to 5000.

Stomp test revealed code 1261 so I replaced the relay and unhooked the battery with no luck. The terminals look ok and the old relays work on my other car.

What should I check next? Could it be a combination of problems? The car only posted one code.

There seems to be no throttle response at all or change in rpm from throttle input.

The only way you're going to get that many revs out of it is with an open throttle or a massive vacuum leak. Check to make sure your throttle works properly and doesn't stick, and check all your hoses and boots to make sure they're installed and intact.

I'm cleaning the throttle body and rewiring the relays to the DME to see what that gets me. Also a new throttle cable because they are cheap and i think it may be sticking. There’s no vac leak, that’s for sure.

Today after cleaning the throttle and relay ports I think I narrowed the symptoms down a bit more. It’s most likely fuel pump, now the car is acting starved with low and stumbling idle and when I crack open the throttle it stumbles like it’s running out of fuel. I have a new pressure regulator and filter. I’ll swap the fuel pump and service the injectors and report back. Another thing I want to try in the mean time is cleaning he carbon track on the AFM

Doesn’t the engine idle up at around 4000rpm if the idle air valve is unplugged? That’s the only thing I’ve come across that sends the engine into runaway idle.

Bouncing idle usually indicates a vacuum leak after the AFM. Do a smoke test, or at least use some brake clean or starting fluid with engine running to find the leak. To get the engine to idle stable, unplug the IAC the moment it "bounces" down to 500-ish RPM.

Issue resolved. Pin 3 on DME tested bad. Replaced with unit off eBay from parts car and she’s running like a champ again.

Wow. Talk about a diagnostic nightmare lol. I've had a couple of those.
