    Factory timing marks

Can the factory timing marks be viewed or identified with the timing belt cover installed? I need to verify or be able to verify timing when I bring it to the dyno so it can be properly set in megasquirt.

Here's how I did mine. I relocated the mark closer to the VR sensor. Pretty easy to get +/- half a tooth (which is all the better you can get with a light anyway). I suggest confirming actual TDC location via inspection camera or placing something in the cylinder and checking the cam. That way you're 100% sure it's right.

Perhaps I will piggy back off this thread and ask a similar question.

I've put a late model 60-2 wheel onto my early m20b23 (originally L-jet). Are the timing marks on the wheel going to line up with anything on the block?

Although the above method of setting tdc manually and putting a few paint pen dots on is pretty easy!

On anything non-standard (actually, any time I REALLY need to know timing is right) I would suggest setting TDC yourself just so you're 100% sure it's correct.

If you really want to go crazy accurate about TDC, find one of these (pic)... more accurate than any TDC mark. Will help you find your piston dwell too. You can DIY this tool, just make sure that the spring in your dial gauge is very light so it won't fight the rod and flex it. Obviously one needs to know what one is doing. Insert it ONLY when piston is close/right before TDC and valves are almost closed (as can easily be seen by looking at cam lobes for that piston). This way there is no tool/valve interference.

I actually found that my factory TDC mark was off my a hair (to the block). That aluminum cover and its TDC mark is way off due to it being flimsy.
