    Transfer Case Bushing

    Hey Guys,

Previous owner installed poly transfer case bushing which has created NVH issues. I want to replace it with oem rubber bushing.

Can this be done with the transfer case still in the car? I have very good access as the previous owner also removed the catalytic converter.

    Thanks!

I imagine pulling the poly bushing out wont be too difficult but pressing the OEM metal case bushing in without a hydraulic press is gonna be difficult.

That is what I was thinking. The poly may be even 2 piece, from the looks of it it will probably fall right out.

Not sure I want to deal with pulling the transfer case just to change out the bushing.....

If you have a wheel bearing tool set you might be able to get away with doing it on the car. Doubtful though.

        To remove the transfercase:
        1. Remove the driveshaft
        2. Remove the 3 bolts on the transmission output shaft guibo
        3. Remove the 4 bolts to the transmission housing
        4. Installation is the reverse of removal

My oem bushing is shot. I was going to puta poly bushing in... now idk what to do? Is your bushing 80 or 95 poly? Would the density make a big difference?

Not sure if its 80 or 95. It was put in by the previous owner. Happy to sell it to you after I replace it. Way too harsh for street use!

I thought I posted this on R3V, but I can't find it here.
              Here's how I did my T-case bushing:

My T-case bushing was pretty much destroyed. Since I have my T-case out for shifter work, I decided I should replace the mount bushing as well.

              Here's how it came out:

              With a big slide hammer:

The puck is 2.500" in diameter--made from 2.5" round bar--and has to be drilled off-center like this because the bushing bolt hole is off center. The puck has to push the bushing rearward out of the mounting ring, so it has to fit through the same hole the bushing does. The bushing OD is 2.540", but the ends have lead-in chamfers such that the diameter available for pushing on it is pretty much exactly 2.500".

We then used a cap for 2.5" pipe with a hole drilled through it on the rear face of the mounting loop with the off-center puck on the forward side of the bushing and ring. We used 3/8" threaded rod to pull the new bushing into place. We had to use anti-seize on the rod and nut or one of them definitely would have galled... the bushing is a pretty tight fit and fairly difficult to install.

                Here's how I did mine:

                1) drop t-case off at shop + a 6 pack of good beer
                2) they pressed in the new bushing
                3) ??????
                4) Profit!

My mechanic says he can do it with the transfer case still in the car. Taking it over next month for that and state inspection. I will let you know the results and cost when it’s done.
