I have 1991 325i.
Recently noticed a knocking/bumping sound coming from the low rear part of the car. Narrowed it down to it happening only while taking off from a stop -- the more stress on the driveline, the more likely the sound is to occur.
Research led to looking at the driveshaft.
--Diff was recently swapped to an LSD and all connections to it are solid.
--Halfshafts/CVs seem fine. There is axial play in the shaft but that seems to be correct.
--diff/driveshaft connection seems fine, no play when attempting to rotate the driveshaft here.
--Driveshaft at the driveshaft/transmission connection has significant rotational play. Guibo seems to actually be in good shape.
Didn't drop the muffler/cat to look at the support bearing area, but it must be something in this area correct? I'm almost certain but wanted to check in with others.
____________
Next question -- assuming the driveshaft needs work, what are my more budget (but still acceptable) options? I want to eventually do an S52 swap, and unless there's a solution that works for both I don't want to drop a bunch of cash.
I've seen some adapter guibos but these seem to be more race-spec/very stiff -- and this is my daily.
Thanks for any help!
