So a really long story, but here is the short of it.
I am basically building a racing sim rig with an E30 and I have most of it done, however I have the cluster and cannot get the speedometer to interface with my PC.
I thought it was something I was doing wrong but now I plugged it into an e30 to see if it was simply something I was doing wrong or something wrong with the cluster itself, and low and behold, the speedometer still does not work.
However, it does make a wicked burning smell and I cannot figure out what it is, clearly there is a short somewhere on the circuit board of the speedometer.
So now that I am in this particular cluster over $200 I really dont want to just throw it away and find another one.
My question is has anybody else had this problem, is it an easyish fix for someone who can solder?
Secondly, could I purchase this speedometer and just swap it out?
The circuit board looks a lot different so I assume no but it is worth a try, I think I have an ETA cluster and it appears to be quite early.
Any help is appreciated.
