    Installing Strut Mounts

OK, clamping the rear one between the wood in a vice worked excellent, however, what should I use to clamp the front strut so that I can get the new strut mount on? I can't get it in a vice because of the spring. My plan was to try and clamp it with some vice-grips through the spring with a piece of rubber or something between the grips. Any tips? How did you guys do it?

I get it snug by using a rag and a pair of channel locks on the shock tube and tightening down the strut nut. But usually I can tighten it fully when the car is on the ground and the compression of the shock is enough to keep it from spinning.

I've used a pair of channel locks with a thick cloth in between the jaws. I clamp it down on the strut tube then use the spring compressors to squeze the two handles tight. I then tighten the nut and remove the pliers. I've yet to leave marks on the 3 cars I've done this too. Some times just setting the car on the ground will provide enough tension to tighten the nut without the shaft spinning.
