    power from m20 stroker?

    hey.

i'm currently thinking of dropping an m20 into a 2002 for my next project. and returning my e36 m3 to daily driver status

i was planning on doing the stroker thing, in an attempt to get some power.

i'm just wondering if someone can give me some power estimates for my setup.

-"E" block with "I" rods and shaved pistons (if i can find it cheap, i'll just go s50 crank with i block)
    -"I" head
    -schrick 288 cams
-MSDS ceramic coated headers to 3" pipe to magnaflow race muffler
    -JC Chip
    -injectors
    -kn filter
    -no power steering
    -no a/c
-fan delete (i'll be running an electric fan, not sure if this is even a mod, but e36 owners tend to think it is)

just a rough estimate would be great. i would like to know, as if i spend all the time and effort to do that, and only end up with 190hp. i'll probably hold off on the engine for a few months, and just do an s14 instead. although the s14 is a hell of a lot more money, the power is there.

and my next question is, does anyone offer a custom chip for the m20? much like AA or Superchips do for e36 owners, where you give them your mods, and then they make a chip for those mods

    thanks,
    Brent

With that small amount of mods and just shaved i pistons you won't see a ton of HP. If you want some big amounts of HP out of a M20, maybe a 2.9 or 3.0 stroker kit would be a good idea.

By the way, it's cam, not cams

That setup is good for 190-200bhp or so.

Does BHP = HP at the crank?

              BHP = brake horse power

I know what the the literal translation is. Where is the power measured from? I believe BHP is the amount of horse power available, thus crank HP.

Mark D'Sylva does, for the right price.

                    thanks for the info guys.

                    i'll look into a d'sylva chip.

and you confirmed what i thought, that even with quite a bit of mods, the m20 really doesnt produce a lot of power.

but after talking to a couple racers today, i realized that even a bone stock m20 should make a fully gutted 02 a lot faster than i can handle. i'm best to do the swap as cheap as possible, and once i improve my skills as a driver, go back in and build the motor

To be more specific, your halfass list of mods does not make a powerful M20.

Dont worry, even a stock M20 in a 02 will whoop ass on any NA m20 powered e30. Have fun

i COMPLETELY agree with 2002maniac. OMG  I love them.

....Thats why I'm building one myself. The stock M20 will be PLENTY for now. 8)

Just a slight hi-jacking of the thread......what about building up an M10? S14 crank and overbore to get 2+ liters and wind up with very respectable power and torque while keeping the weight down in front :!:

Not to talk down an M20 powered '02....there's no question it would be quick. I'm just thinking about overall handling dynamics with the larger/heavier mill in there. Power is nothing without control 8)

LOL damn Jordan take it easy on the guy.

MPoweredkid - How about getting a super ETA or ETA engine with I head and turbocharging it?? The E engines are cheap enough, which leaves most of the cost for the turbo system. Just an idea. However a good 190-200 HP/170lbs torque from a naturally aspirated M20 in a 2002 is already a huge leap in performance.
