    Oil In Bellhousing

just replacing my clutch...got everything out but have discovered that my bellhousing has an awful lot of oil in it....which would have been causing clutch slip! im thinking that its the rear main crank shaft seal leaking....any other suggestions? not exactly a situation i like to be in...

rear main seal, and transmission input shaft seal are the most likely causes.

However it is not uncommon for the valve cover gasket/doghouses to leak oil down in.

If its alot of oil its likey the rear main seal. Is it engine oil for sure? or tranny oil?

Hey jordan, when you remove the piece that holds the rear main seal, you don't have to drain the oil, thats only on the 4 cylinders, right?

I'm actualy not sure. You will spill some oil, but the vast majority of it will drain away to the front sump of the engine.

The trans can also leak from the shaft plug below the input shaft. The problem is that you can't get this plug out unless you rip the whole tranny apart. It looks like you can if you take the circlip out, but let me save you some time, you can't. All you can do is fill that dip where the plug is with some epoxy to seal it shut.
