    My m10b engine thread

It's Turbo time... picked this up today for $200, looks clean under the valve cover and engine oil that came out of it was still clean (after it's been sitting for a year+). PO told me car was a euro delivery car and was regularly maintained by a local dealer. They gifted the car to their kid who totaled it and they kept the engine. Plan is to take it apart and have an engine shop check it all out, if it's straight and true then it will be built with new pistons and possibly rods .

Picked up a 1000lb engine stand from harbor freight, on sale for $39!!!

      The "b" is for boost.

I got the intake / head apart today for a machine shop to test/clean as a start. Block is coming apart next, not sure if this will be 1.8l or 2.0l engine as I am not exactly sure what fits what yet.

What type of pistons should I be looking for if I stay with the same bore to not weaken the block ? Also, stay with oem bearings or ?

It's an m10b18, but I have a 2002 block (minus rods and pistons) sitting next to it but I heard it's not a direct bolt on, something the way it mounts ? So I would rather just use all of m10b18 parts instead.

Can I archieve good results with the m10b18 head/block w/o boring the cylinders out and instead running aftermarket rods/pistons/rings/gasket etc ?

I am shooting for 300hp at the crank, or about 250 at the rear wheels . Last night I removed all accessories and it's down to just the block/pistons/rods and lower pan/pump and the main pulley. Next I want to remove the rest and send the block and head to a machine shop for cleaning. I do need to decide what pistons and rods I should run though...

              Suggestions ?

What type of pistons should I be ordering for FI application , flat top , dish, spherical dish ? Should I go with stock bore but different height ?

I'm going to be running 2002 turbo pistons in my 2l turbo. Flat tops or dish are fine. What kind of boost do you want? With 300 hp - I'm assuming 15+ Lbs. Order some dished pistons from IE and use the 02 crank and rods to make 2L. Use the 318i head with this setup to make low compression ratios and great flow.

I am not sure what boost yet, 10-15 psi . Is the 318i crank ok or is it weak ?

Head and block almost ready to be dropped off for cleaning.

use the 2002 crank. It is forged, the 318i crank is cast.

Should I consider a different CAM or is stock cam fine for FI ? What about rockers and what valve springs should I order ?

If you dont plan on reving it any higher than 6200, you will be fine with all stock stuff. The cam will be fine for a low power turbo engine.

Looks like you have aborted the M/S50 plans then ?

Jean you should click around on TopEnd's site for inspiration and maybe some answers .

Thanks Teaguer, you are correct I figured since I won't be able to use most of the components I've replaced on the m10 (all of cooling sytem, clutch work, ignition etc), I might as well try and put it all to good use. Plan is a complete rebuild of the m10, all of seals, gaskets, bearings, pump etc to make it as reliable as possible with my goal of 300 or so at the crank on 91.

There is still a chance that it might not all work out , as I don't have experience with tuning and will have to seek help in that regard, and then I'll have to go m/s50 route.
